Aunt Nancy and the Bothersome Visitors by Phyllis Root and illustrated by David Parkins is four short stories about Aunt Nancy’s encounters with four bothersome visitors. When these four bothersome visitors, Old Man Trouble who brings trouble with him every time, Cousin Lazybones who is so lazy even his shadow didn’t get up to follow him around, Old Woeful who’s brought a doomsday attitude with every time and then there is Mister Death which we all know what he does, come to visit Aunt Nancy, E...more
For ages 8 and up, these four stories, created by the author, are true to the trickster tradition. The book lends itself to silent reading and read-alouds, as a contrast with so many other collections of trickster tales which contain dialect and other features that make them best suited as read-alouds. The format should appeal to children, with a narrow size and unusual silhouette illustrations. Aunt Nancy never misses a beat as she deals with Old Man Trouble, Cousin Lazybones, Old Woeful and...more

This is a great collection of original "trickster tales" set in the south. Aunt Nancy is the trickster, and there are four tales where she is up against "Old Man Trouble," "Cousin Lazy-Bones," "Old Woeful," and "Mister Death." This is a great read-aloud, and good for 1st-4th grade, especially 2nd/3rd. KOK
I was very surprised at how much I liked this book. A series of short fables/folk tales in an easy reader/first chapter book, it was clever, fun, and quite engaging.
Trickery stories that teachers would probably love for their classes, but probably not that appealing to kids.
I love most anything Phyllis Root writes. I have been an Aunt Nancy fan for years, so it was great to see 2 new stories featuring her. Also check out Rosie's Fiddle by Phyllis Root. Great voice!
Trickster tales for early chapter readers or would be a great read-aloud. My favorite story was 'Aunt Nancy and Old Woeful,' especially the full color illustration done by David Parkins.
This is a fun short story collection about Aunt Nancy who out-tricks Old Man Trouble a "bad-luck-bringer", Old Woeful, "the most complainingest person you ever did meet" and even Mister Death.
I think this would be a great resource for storytellers. I don't ususally tell tales, but would love to tell one of these Aunt Nancy stories.
sometimes I wish I was clever...this had some good ideas in it. I think I will try some twists with my "precious ones" at school.

"Picture books are performances," says Phyllis Root, quoting some sage advice she once received. "They're performances that involve a child--something both of you do. And once I started thinking of them that way, I started getting much looser about making up words and playing around with rhythm."
