After reading '2010: Odyssey Two', I found that this book was a very well written story. The story talks about the journey right after the events of '2001: A Space Odyssey' on what happens to the spaceship Discovery and David Bowman. Doctor Floyd, the man who help Bowman and other scientist to find the discovery of a black monolith engraved on Earth's moon, was granted to help out the Soviet Union (the Soviet Union was still around during the publication of this book) to bring back Discovery...more

I grew up watching the Peter Hymans movie adaptation of this novel. I later found a copy of the book in my high school library and read it while I was a teenager. It enjoyed it, knew I would read it again, but it has taken me about fifteen years. Amanda found a used copy at the library a few years ago, and I decided that after 2001 A Space Odyssey and Rendezvous with Rama, a little more Arthur C. Clarke wouldn’t hurt.

Ten years after the mysterious and disastrous eve...more

Although I have not read the first book, nor seen the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, I thoroughly enjoyed 2010: Odyssey Two. This book, at least in my experience, can be read as a stand alone volume. One might glean more from its pages having read the previous book, but I never felt lost or confused by not having read the first book.
The science fiction book club to which I belong chose this as our January selection--appropriate given the new year. 2010 is, of course, science fiction. Altho...more

This book is about the United States and the Soviet Union (at the time of the book, the Soviet Union was still around) working together to revived the abonanded spaceship, Discovery. However, the United States and the Soviet Union do not only have to revived the Discovery, but also find out of the mysterious black monolith (a.ka. "Big Brother") that orbits Jupiter.

There are several wonderful books in the world that simply shouldn't have sequels. The original novel '2001: A Space Odyssey' is one of these books.

'2010' is essentially a reminder to you that you should go back and read '2001'. New characters with less interesting situations than the first book, some returning characters who now must speak cryptically in order to copy the aire of mystery that the first book had, and most noticeably, an attempt to resolve the open-endedness of th...more

Back in 1982 when 2010: Odyssey Two was published I was in college, and my roommate was an obsessive reader of science fiction and fantasy. I probably read less than one-third of his throughput, but undoubtedly there are two hundred or so books that I don't recall, or that I remember only dimly when I am reminded of the titles or plot outlines.

Shortly after starting, I realized that this was one of them. Even though I had long since lost any grasp of the details, I knew could recall ...more

While conceptually very well thought out, 2010 doesn't seem to burst forth with the combination of suspense and wonder that made its predecessor so entrancing. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of theoretical science to be enjoyed in this book - something which Clark supplies in reliable doses. Rather, its the narrative - which moves at a rather slow, plodding pace - that makes parts of this book unintentionally dull. I credit this misfortune to Clark's attempt to make the characters more "...more

A sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey in much the same way Beneath the Planet of the Apes is a sequel to The Planet of the Apes. It repeats much of the same material as the previous book and introduces very little new material. It was nearly as enjoyable to read as the first book, and the characters and situations were much more informed than in the first book as the first was written before the moon landings and this one was written in the 1980s. Arthur C. Clarke does have a knack for describing...more

I loved this book. Much like its predecessor it shared a sense of wonder at the universe around us. You could just imagine Clarke at his typewriting being amazing and awed at everything around him, and it fills every sentence in his work.

A decade after Dave Bowman's last message, a joint US-Soviet expedition is sent to retrieve the Discovery. This is the story of what happens to them when they get there.

The writing is wonderful, the characters, although still sketches, are mo...more

The second of the series - nine years later Dr. Floyd must battle political foes to journey to Jupiter and find out what happened to the mission and to Dave Bowman.
To do it he needs the help of the presumably scitzophrenic master computer, HAL.
But once HAL is awake, Floyd finds out that there were two totally diferent missions being pursued, and that they have trespassed into a pl;ace where they are definitely not wanted.
Guided by the tramsformed Dave Bowman, and the relu...more

So it's December 2009 and I find this book on the shelf called 2010. I want to be the first to know what was perdicted for our era. So, I read it. A lot of people are familiar with The 2001 Space Odysessy, with the computer, Hal, that goes crazy. Could you imagine a space crew going back to that ship and starting that computer back up in hopes to better understand what happened on the 2001 voyage? It is a sequil to the clasic and should be read.

If you hurry you can still get i...more

This is actually the first Arthur C. Clarke novel I read. After seeing and loving the film 2010, I plowed into this novel. In hindsight, Clarke was never going to outdo his masterful work on 2001. Still this is a great odyssey in its own right.

The human heart of this novel is Heywood Floyd, a supporting character in 2001. In this novel he becomes the protagonist, haunted by the failures of the past, and obsessed with solving the mysteries of the doomed Discovery mission. Though not ...more

I have mixed feelings about this book. Given that title, it should be a sequel to the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it's not. It's more a semi-sequel to the movie of the same name. Where the novel and the book differ, 2010 follows the movie, expect where it changes things to make this novel more consistent. Since it's been a long time since I've seen the movie, I'm not aware of what those differences are.

Clark's writing continues to be quite beautiful. He has the rare combi...more

Earlier this year I made a vow to read all of the Space Odyssey books before 2010. I'm very glad I could revisit this particular book which I read halfway as s teenager, as the movie version is one of my favorite science fiction films of all time. 2010 has more action and dramatic tension than its predecessor. Clarke really got it right this time. Contrasted with the characters from 2001 Floyd, Curnow, and the other Russian and American characters seem more like real people with real feelings. T...more

It seems i might be kind of hooked on this space odyssey thing (just like Arthur Clarke himself was, because even though he swore he had left it behind him when he finished 2001: a space odyssey {though Kubrick was the one to tear up his sets so no one could film a sequel~they did anyway~though i haven't seen it} Clarke ended up going on to write 2010: odyssey two~and two more after that~and i will probably end up reading the entire sage because that's just the type of girl i am...actually, i tr...more

I am too to late to explain myself and any interest in a series of myth proportion novel from Arthur C. Clarke. Just what I had been thinking for many years. I’ve seen 2001 and when 2010 was released on VHS. I was more impressed with this following story simply because its eerie and suspenseful. It was years after, I think in 1990? that I found this book in a country flea market, and invested, and kept it with my collection. I’ve only read a brief chapter out of interests – the one where t...more
