With all of the zombie novels, movies, and television shows, it's hard to find an interesting angle to break through all of the other content out there. Wrath James White accomplishes this with a killer premise. The novel starts off with an African warlord using zombies as part of his army as he tries to take over his home country. That's not the novel aspect of it. What hooked me in was the idea of forming an underground mixed martial arts organization pitting the reanimated corpses of former ...more

Shelves: horror, bizarro

Wrath James White has always proven to deliver high caliber writing and visceral violence intertwined with astute social commentary. This time, he writes about the mixed martial arts world, something the writer has quite a bit of experience with, and mixes a little police procedural with zombies, underground fighting, and a power-hungry warlord in Uganda. A little too much for a novella, but White, for the most part, pulls it off.

four stars is the best I have ever given a zombie novel or novella (this is kind of in the middle). the reason I didn't hate it is because it was not a post apocalyptic band together for survival type of book and although parts where brutal it was not just a case of filling the pages with as much gore as possible either. the whole book was well written, (as is anything by wrath james white) but the fights really stood out. both with zombies and with two people, some of them where fairly long ...more

I knew I would love the mashup of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and Zombies before I even picked up this book. After having read several of Mr. White's stories, I also knew that the subject matter would be given a serious, terrifying treatment but...oh was I surprised at this work! Why? Because I am a splatterpunk fan who got freaked the hell out by this book. Mr. White begins the story in the homeland of Africa, in the dirt and mud of Uganda, amidst the terrors of fanatical warlords with genocidal ...more

My first Wrath James White novel. When i first started reading i felt worried that it would be low quality as it seemed to be made solely for the kindle and i cannot help but think that self published e books are not the same as published paper and hard back. Well this book proved my biased thoughts wrong, this was a fun read with a unique and orignal story line. It involves a virus found in the lawless playground of North Uganda when the government forces are in a endless battle with the Lords ...more

MMA fighting and Zombies. Two genres that I would never have imagined, but then again, I do not have the imaginative mind as Wrath James White. Who else can take two seemingly unrelated sub-genres and mash them up and make them work? No one else that's who. White creates a plausible scenario and breathes some new life in a genre that has been beaten to death, and makes it roar with new life. There is some of the WJW gore that we have all come to love and expect, as well as realistically drawn ...more
