First of all I'd like to thank Vahan Zanoyan for writing this wonderful book, the main purpose of which (I assume) is to raise AWARENESS to the subject of Human Trafficking - one of the most horrifying and fastest-growing activities of trans-national criminal organizations.

I'd also like to thank him for donating part of his earnings from this book to FIGHT against Human Trafficking and HELP the survivors - I admire him for that!

As for the book itself, I must say - what a captivating and poetic

This is the story of a young girl who is sold into prostitution by her mother who is led to believe that she will be a model in Greece. I do not understand all the rave reviews. The writing was poor. The brutal rape scenes bordered on pornographic in their detail. These horrific stories were paired with alternate chapters about a detective looking into the case that was mind numbingly boring. Human trafficking is a very important topic and if you are interested in learning more about it, try ...more

This book not only educates the reader on a human rights topic but is also a fast paced thriller. I was impressed with the research the author put into sex trafficking and his ability to weave the history and current challenges of Armenia throughout the book. The characters are well developed and will pull at a wide range of your emotions. The proceeds from this novel go to support the cause. Check out the author's Facebook page to learn more.

The plot centers on one woman's experience being trafficked and about those who would rescue her. It is a good story, presenting several facets of the human trafficking business from its brutality to the customers who cast a blind eye. The story moves well, keeping the reader engaged and not settling into preachiness or a diatribe. Indeed, one unusual aspect of this book is the very detailed descriptions of the Armenian landscape and culture. The story weaves between a woman not in control of ...more

This is a remarkable book. It is fast paced enough to match a good thriller, exposes a deep vein of corruption, and describes the plight of young orphaned women across a swath of countries in the Middle East, as well as Russia. The elegiac descriptions of the Armenian countryside could serve well as advertizing for tourism, and the strength of Armenian villagers in the face of real and present threats to their lives is astonishing. It is that rare book that engages the reader as entertainment ...more

Words can't possibly express the strong emotional pull this novel brought out. I was taken to a different place and taught about the horrors of humanity through the elegant writing of Vahan Zanoyan. I would recommend this book whole heartily to anyone. One can easily visualize the characters and environment they are surrounded in, as well as the emotions of all the individuals involved in this intense story of human trafficking.

I really enjoyed this book and how beautifully written it was despite such a difficult subject matter. My only qualm with the novel is that it seemed to end rather quickly, when I felt there was still a few loose ends. But that's just my opinion. Very glad to have read it.

One of my favorite authors, Chris Bohjalian, mentioned A PLACE FAR AWAY in the Acknowledgement section of his recent novel THE GUEST ROOM. Both novels concern human trafficking by Armenian and Russian gangsters. In Bohjalian's novel, the young woman is recruited/abducted from Armenia and brought at a later date to New York City. The girl in Zanoyan's novel is also abducted in Armenian but is brought to Dubai, after "training" in Moscow. In both novels, the woman and her family are misled about ...more

Very well done story about human trafficking that didn't dwell on the abuse that these girls go through. It takes place in Armenia where it is a huge problem. What I enjoyed about this was the intrigue, suspense and mystery on how they were going to get the leader with a wide spread control on the situation. A fascinating story that was intense and so well put together. Dudes to the author to put a spotlight on this that is readable. I will now read the sequel which has gotten 5 stars for his ...more
A good read!

Lots of suspense with some Armenian History. It Calls attention to the plight of girls kidnapped in the sex trade.
