Wow. What an understated little trilogy. Dark and foreboding, with broken characters. My kind of story. Plus who doesn't love vampires?

I tried, I really did. But I just couldn't keep reading this book. The plot was reasonable and had some slightly interesting points, but I couldn't get past the prose. I'm not sure what this author is doing that doesn't work for me, but I could not finish this book. His characters felt fine, no more shallow or two dimentional than any other fantasy novel. I think that the problem may be that he spent too much time telling, not showing, and there was too much explanation of perfectly obvous thing ...more

Johnson starts his Lightbringer Triology strongly in his first book. I found his characters and the post-apocolyptic world filled with vampires of his creation to not only be engaging, but also highly unpredictable. In a good way. Though the second and third books slightly miss the mark, I would definitely recommend 'Forging of the Shadows' to anyone who wants a solid, fantasy read.

I read this book at least ten years ago and I remember liking it much better back then. it is a little disappointing. I think when I read this the first time I would have rated it 3 or for stars. I have read a lot more fantasy since then and this felt like so much else that I have read.

I could have lived without reading this book.
Though I did like the fact that instead of portraying vampires as "beautiful people" these were the ugly, power hungry ones. And maybe the heroes will be more compelling in future books but I found them, for the most part, rather annoying!

A fairly interesting fantasy/horror mix with the requisite number of heroes and villains. It was entertaining if not memorable.

Vampires. I love them. Need I say more. Interesting take on them. But, I never did read the rest of the trilogy, so I guess that says it all.
