John Oxman is a sailor whose knee is sufficiently injured knee that he cannot go to sea. Instead, he finds employment as the doorman of a house of doubtful repute, and becomes the rescuer of Betty, a woman in distress he finds coming down the stairs. Betty has been the subject for insertion of what is described as nanotechnology, and has had a breast removed to recover it. Interesting plot, with another different protagonist, the merchant seaman. Add cutting edge science, and plenty of plot twists and locations, with the solid grounded merchant seaman holding the other diverse characters together, and you get a satisfyingly believable story.
