Estremamente interessante e per nulla complicato, tanto che anche io che sull'argomento avevo soltanto reminescenze di liceo sono riuscita a seguire tranquillamente tutto. Il primo saggio è più tecnico, per "addetti ai lavori", il secondo più apertamente dedicato al folklore e contiene spunti davvero brillanti, che mi hanno aperto un mondo su elementi che magari ho trovato fin da bambina nelle fiabe senza capirne l'origine. Amazing reading - a mixture of what I've been expecting and what I have long forgotten about.
I guess this is the first time I see the literature explained through the economic formations - and feasible too. Sane and logical, that's what is wonderful. To tell the truth, I saw some before - but few (perhaps, I was born too late), and rather lame even for that.
Very, very say and disillusional - to differ from psychoanalysts and all that Jung.

I haven't read much of this kind of thing so maybe I'm overly impressed but I think it's brilliant. It's also incredibly readable. I've had to read some lit-crit let's-decision-narrative-structure-historicism-blah-blah essays that were pointless and convoluted and seemed designed to put everyone off litcrit entirely so Propp's readability gets major points from me.

This is a classic in narrative analysis and literary criticism. Propp, a Russian Formalist, unpacks the genre of folktale paring them down to their essential elements. Read as a follow-up to Levi-Strauss' The Structural Study of Myth, this book will make you an indomitable force!
I had to read it for my MA dissertation and I thought it to be very boring. I suppose it's some great revolutionary book among the Literature researchers, but I don't really see what it brought to me as a student who loves reading for the sake of it.
I should have read this years ago when I was taking Folklore at CCSF, but I frankly had less gumption then. Will give it one more shot in the Great Winter Read of Oh Eight, once finals are over.

I'm not sure how a book about folktales could be so...dull. Why then four stars? Well, this is a unique book that shows the startling repetition of themes in folktales, and seems to me to powerfully support much of Jung's work, specifically about what he called the "collective storehouse of symbols." There's just too much cross-cultural overlap in the themes and forms of folktales from all over the world to ignore this. So four stars for the uniqueness and actual importance of the book. The translation is a little lame - the Baba Yaga character should not have been identified as a Witch. But still the contents is fairly well preserved :)
Taking a field as diverse as fairy tales and seeing patterns within the many examples, Propp has created an interesting schema for thinking about tales.
One of the best books in the field. Ever. If you have anything to do with writing, linguistics, or literature, you pretty much have to read it.
Seminal work from 1928 on narrative structures, very helpful for those who work with interactive/digital storytelling.
Good although I need to know more about the Russian tales treated ...
This book changed the way I write stories...

To persuade you need a good story. To get a good story you need to know the stuff good stories are made for.
reading, once again in a very reloaded way, this very important book from the first serious theoric of narrative.
Very interesting, but equally dry. Not always as consistent as I would have liked...
I'm reading the Spanish version. So far i like Propp's style.
