I HAVE BEEN WAITING (not so patiently) FOR THIS BOOK! Imagine my happy face when I won an ARC copy of it from Mr. Smith’s website! :D WOO! (Side note – Mr. Smith always has a cool contest going on — check out his website). Chupacabra is the next book in Mr. Smith’s series about cryptids (Book 1 is Cryptid Hunters and Book 2 is Tentacles). “What’s a cryptid?” you ask? Well maybe you didn’t, but I’m going to tell you. Crypids are creatures that are reported to exist, but it hasn’t been proven (lik ...more

Chupacabra by Roland Smith – 4th/5th grade and up, Adventure – First off, warning! This is not the finale. I read somewhere that it would be the completion of the series, but no. You are left hanging with anticipation of the new book release. Enjoyed revisiting settings, characters, meeting new ones, finding out that Roland Smith snuck in a character from another favorite book. Brilliant book with a subtle message of animal cruelty and exposure to the psyche of people who collect animals. I real ...more

I really liked this book because of all the action Smith packed into this book along wit the descriptive words he used to express the events that were happening in the book. Also I liked how the author changes the view of the situation by all the characters expressing their opinion on the situation at hand by the author changing to another characters opinion every few pages. The only negative thing I would say about the book is the plot was a little confusing. This book was about a boy named Mart ...more
So, I've finally gotten around to reading the continuing adventures of Marty, Grace, Luther, and all their friends. Tentacles ended in a cliffhanger, so I was happy to start Chupacabra.

It picks up more or less where the last book left off, with the giant squid being delivered. Then the crew splits up, heading back to Cryptos Island, off to South America, etc. Marty and Luther are meant to go back to Cryptos--and they're not happy about it. Grace is in the hands of Noah Blackwood.
So, they decide

Roland Smith has done it again with his newest in the Marty and Grace series , Chupacabra. An exciting read that takes place primarily at the Noah's Ark site in Seattle. When the second book in the series, Tentacles, ended Grace was with her grandfather and he also had the dinosaur hatchlings. This third book introduces a new character, Dylan Hitchcock, son of members of the Cryptos Island Crew.

This book is about Marty, and Luther as they try to save there friend Grace from the evil clutches of Noah Blackwood, but Noah Blackwood came up with an idea that will surely take Marty and Luther out of the equation entirely. Will Marty and Luther save Grace from Noah Blackwood or will it be too late for Marty and Luther to save her friend Grace from the development of a thing called "CH-9?" The theme of this book is to never underestimate your enemy.

In my opinion, I think this was a great book

Roland Smith never disappoints! The characters are so real and some folks from a previous book join them. I recommend this series to people of all ages.

Fans of Roland Smith's Cryptid Hunters series will find themselves quickly pulled into the action in this third volume in the series. It picks up shortly after the events in the previous book, Tentacles. Marty and his friend Luther have returned to the Pacific Northwest with Marty's Uncle Travis Wolfe, along with Wolfe's entourage of staff. While they were able to capture the giant squid in the in previous book, it cost them the two baby dinosaurs they found in the first book along with Travis' ...more

The book was about Marty and his friend Luther's adventures in trying to rescue Marty's sister Grace from the clutches of her Uncle, who is not as he appears. I liked the book because the book appeared to be interesting to me, so I went to read it. Although I had not read the preceding two books, key events from them were often referenced and information was provide on these events in a section before and after the book and throughout the book. In Chupacabra by Roland Smith, Marty O’hara and his best friend Luther Smyth go on an adventure to their enemy, Noah Blackwood’s animal ark, to retrieve their friend, and Marty’s cousin, Grace. Noah Blackwood is her grandfather and he captured her against her will in the end of the prequel, Tentacles. The title explains the new animal that Travis Wolfe, Grace’s father who also is an enemy to Noah Blackwood, plans to hunt down. Mythical creatures coming to life? A mad man with an itchy trigger finger? A group of kids to stop it all. WAIT...WHAT!? That was my reaction when I started reading this book. In the book Chupacabra, written by Roland Smith and number three in the Cyprid Hunter trilogy (however this is not the finale!), Marty wants to rescue his cousin Grace from Noah Blackwood (a very powerful and dangerous man) who has taken her captive. So Marty is trying to trick Noah into giv
I bought this book at the school book fair purely because of the title. Every year I (try to) teach a unit on cryptids. This book looked like a good addition to my cryptid library.

I read the book thoroughly which led to confusion. At the beginning of the book is a list of characters. Since this is the second book in the series, I thought it would be a wise decision to read the cast list so I could understand what was going on. As it turns out, some of the characters were introduced in this book.

It was…alright.

I had read the first two books in the series several years before, so I re-read them before reading this one. In fact, I read all three books in three days.

Reading them one after another made one thing (or many things?) glaringly obvious: the continuity errors. There are many things that differ from the first book, or the second, or that are different from all three. It was a major distraction for me, to keep having eye color (for example) constantly changing on me. The technolo

SERIES: Marty & Grace #3

A vivid read about real friendships and wildlife conservation, ethics and actions. And an evil grandfather. (Step-Mothers shouldn't have all the fun being villains!)

There are two camps in this book: the nefarious Noah Blackwood who "collects" wildlife specimens for his private benefit, only letting some of the creatures be seen in his "zoos." Underground layers hide the truth from the world. Blackwood knows just how to charm a guest or a tele

It's tough to read the third in a series first. I might really love this had I read them in order. Though I had some trouble with mechanics of an ARC that was missing all punctuation surrounding dialogue, I was rooting for the characters from page one, hating the bad guys and loving the mission the kids had before them. Cryptid lovers will want to sink their teeth into this series, and I can't wait to start some of my students off on it from book 1.

It was a long four year wait for the follow up to Cryptid Hunters and Tentacles, but it was worth it. Roland Smith doesn't disappoint with Chupacabra, a book I thought would be the final installment in this series. But happy day, we find out on the last page that there will be one final book. Please don't let it be another four year wait though!

At the end of Tentacles Grace had been kidnapped by her ruthless and extremely dangerous grandfather Noah Blackwood and his henchmen. Along with Grace he

I thought that this book was a good mixture of adventure and suspense. The book is the third in Roland Smith's series about cryptozoological animals. If you are thinking about reading this book, look to read the other two before this one (it will make lots more sense). I really like how this book can go from serious to comedic in only three sentences. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure tales with the caveat that they should also read the first two books in the series.

In my opinion, anything Roland Smith writes is more than worth reading. He is one of the best authors around today. I love this series and look forward to the next book in the series. He is one of the reasons I read YA books--authors whose writing is far above so many "adult" authors. This book was not what I expected-but isn't that what good authors do? I loved how he brought characters from his other series into the story.

I'm absolutely going to order the series for our library. Generally viewed as middle grade, Smith is always so accessible and adventurous in his stories. This "Marty and Grace" series is a riveting action-packed science fiction adventure featuring twins cum cousins whose growing cast of human characters and cryptoid characters are unique, curious, and humorous.

Give me some great adventure! Smith is awesome.
