This is an real eye opening book. I find myself becoming more aware of my rights: what they are and how I am able to exercise each day. This book challenged me to become more aware politically. Unfortunately it is one of the things I took for granted. My heart, prayers and support goes out the human right activist in China and the Chinese people.

I love reading anything about China and especially about their political system's effects on everyday lives. So naturally, I expected to love this. I didn't. I think it was the awkward translation, but it was hard to feel connected to any of the authors' stories about their experiences with repression, which mostly took the form of long, long, interviews with the police. "In the Shadow of the Rising Dragon" illustrates in a haunting manner the invasiveness and pervasivness of the state in Chinese society. What could have easily raised the book to new heights--as well as condemned it to histrionics--is a heightened sense of emotion. To the book's credit, this is mostly absent, favoring instead a cold, calculating, straightforward narrative of each author's experiences, showing us, the Westerner, the non-Chinese, just how regular and usual the terrible occurrences ...more

A look at the 'soft' oppression occurring in modern China, nasty and secretive. The writer's hope it will end in their lifetime but given North Korea and other examples, they may be optimistic.
