Once upon a time, this was my favourite book.

Set in ancient northern Nigeria, this is a story of slavery and wickedness, of freedom and love.

Amina, a milkmaid, is kidnapped during an everyday trip to market and begins a long and difficult journey into slavery farther across the desert.

Bought by a king, Amina is so good in caring for her sick mistress that she is given her freedom. On her way home, she meets the prince Ahmed, and they fall in love and marry.
