The Enormous Croc is not as smart as he thinks he is. He has all kinds of clever plans to catch a juicy child or two for his lunch. But on his way to the town, he's stupid enough to tell every creature he meets where he is going and why. So when he tries all his ruses to fool the children, Humpy-Rumpy the Hippo and Trunky the Elephant and Muggle-Wump the Monkey and the Roly-Poly Bird rush to the rescue and foil his plans before he can snatch any kids. Finally, Trunky winds him up and sends h More...

This book appears to be aimed at a slightly younger age group than his other bestselling stories. It’s fairly short at sixty pages and the story arc is rather simplistic. The Enormous Crocodile is a ‘wicked beastly beast’ with an appetite for small children. He travels through the jungle to look for his prey and meets an array of colourful creatures.
I think that this would be a great book for introducing adjectives early on in key stage two. All of the animal characters really come to li More...

Because of my comic Crocodile Tears, which friends and family are ever enthusiastic about (but which is currently only posted on my twitter and facebook: http://twitter.com/jannelandet and http://www.facebook.com/jannelandet), I've been given lots of crocodile gifts lately. For Christmas, from BF's aunt and uncle, I got a small, brass croc from Nigeria (I think it was), and now, for my birthday, I got crocodile oven mitts from the in-laws and this book, The Enormous Crocodile from my dad.

In the biggest, brownest muddiest river in Africa two crocodiles lay. They were getting hungry and one of them wanted to eat a nice juicy child for his lunch. The biggest crocodile thought he was the bravest so he thought for his lunch he will go get a big juicy child to eat. He swam to the side of the river and crawled out of the water. A gigantic Hippo was standing in the mud on the river bank he asked the croc where are you going? I have secret plans and clever tricks said the crocodile. He w More...

This story starts off with two crocodiles in one of the biggest muddiest rivers in Africa. One of the crocodiles being “enormous” the other being called not -so -big. The enormous crocodile is boasting to the other crocodile in the river telling him all about how he has invented this spectacular plan to make children his latest desired meal. As he sets off on his trip through the African jungle the enormous crocodile can't resist telling all the other animals in the jungle just exactly what he's More...

It’s muschious, it’s duper,
It’s better than rotten old fish.
You mash it and munch it,
You chew it and crunch it!
It’s lovely to hear it go squish!”

With his "secret plans and clever tricks," the Enormous Crocodile desires to lunch not with but on a nice, juicy child. His croc companion, the Notsobig One, is the first to try to talk him out of his scheme, claiming children are no good to eat.

One jungle critter after another--from Trunky the elephant to Muggle-Wump the monkey to the Roly-Poly Bird--tries to prevent the Enormous Crocodile from carrying out his dastardly deed, but on he waddles toward the village. His clev More...

This picture book is no doubt appealing to the eye, however, the actual text is brilliantly written and very humorous. It is about an enormous greedy crocodile that eats children. On his way through the jungle he meets different animals, such as a hippopotamus, an elephant, a monkey and a bird. He tells these animals about his ‘secret plans and clever tricks’ to eat the children in the village.
During the book, we see the crocodile’s attempts to gobble up the children, however the animals f More...

The Enormous Crocodile was a favourite book of mine as a child and I have very fond memories of it. At the beginning the Enormous Crocodile boasts that he is the bravest and most clever crocodile in the jungle. He furthermore boasts that he has "secret plans and clever tricks" to lure his favourite food ,children, to him. On his way to a village with lots of children he describes his plans to several different animals in the jungle and they all disagree/dislike his plans. These animals More...

This is about a HUNGRY enormous crocodile. It's great for children to listen to and read. As I read it I began to read it with all the different voices, it was fun to read and I can see how the children would scream when the enormous crocodile was trying his 'Clever tricks', along with how the children might cheer when the enormous crocodile's tricks do not work. It's a story that I have never read and found it interesting as I read further and further. The crocodile did come to a dreadful end b More...

The Enormous Crocodile is an awesome book by Roald Dahl. I thoroughly enjoyed this book when I was a child and many years on I still enjoyed it.
The story is about a very greedy crocodile that is silly enough to tell all the animals in the jungle that he is going to look for some juicy children to eat. Little does he know that the animals have a plan of their own.....

I read this book to my 6 year old and she laughed soooooo much and loved looking at all the pictures. She said " More...

"Secret plans and clever tricks!" Does any more need be said?

Alright. But only a bit.

I really enjoy those situations where I can spot Dahl's interests or tendencies gleaming, but The Enormous Crocodile is probably about as unabashed as it gets. Directly inspired by Just So Stories (a single scene in Matilda makes this clear), The Enormous Crocodile is much less complex and classic, but is so darkly silly and wonky that it has equal staying power.

What can I More...

“The Enormous Crocodile” is another popular children’s book from the creative mind of Roald Dahl. Quentin Blake’s illustrations are also appreciated in this adaptation of how a crocodile’s plans to eat children leads to the follies of his ways.

Roald Dahl does an excellent job at creating a storyline that is both dramatic and humorous at the same time as the Enormous Crocodile tries to feed on some innocent children, while at the same time, the other animals of the jungle foil the cro More...

I think this is one of those books that would easily charm both children and adults. I know I loved it! Taking place in Africa, it's about the Enormous Crocodile and his Secret Plans and Clever Tricks in an attempt to find a child to eat. He tells other jungle animal about his plans, singing out rhymes when they're appalled, and struts through the land full of confidence. What's not to love? It's funny, clever, and just plain well-written. I think this would probably be a fun one to read a More...

The letters my students wrote to the Enormous Crocodile as a literature-response assignment were priceless. They took different angles. Some advised the EC to stop trying to eat children (Just don't do it! Eat vegetables instead! Children are not healthy for you!). Others gave him suggestions for more effective 'secret plans and clever tricks' (throw a birthday party and invite children, make cookies, come to Achievement First!). The character is wicked. The book is wickedly entertaining.

Dahl is one of my favorite authors, but I wish I had read this one when I was a kid. While I still love many of his other works, such as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I think now I am unfortunately just too old to really appreciate this one.

The Enormous Crocodile lives in the biggest brownest muddiest river in Africa. He has sharp shining teeth and a tremendous appetite -- for nice, juicy children, his favorite lunchtime treat.

The Enormous Crocodile is sure that his Clever Tricks will snare him enough tender morsels to fill his empty stomach, but the other creatures in the jungle have their own plans. And if everything goes right, not one child will be mashed and munched and chewed and crunched!

This is one of the very first books I ever remember learning how to read--aside from the Cat and the Hat that is.

Taking place in Africa, this is both a great tale for childern and adults. He comes up with all these "clever" plans to eat the childern. While the Roly-Poly bird, Muggle-Wump the the monkey, and Trunky the elephant all go about trying to trick him. Turns out, he's not as smart as he thinks he is!

This was a weird, but fun tale. I liked how the crocodile devised "clever" tricks to fool the little children. Some of his disguises were pretty funny. I loved the illustrations by Quentin Blake, they were perfect for the story. I would recommend.

I have always enjoyed Roald Dahl's books and this one was also a winner. Crocodile tells his jungle friends that he is looking for some children to eat because they are nice and juicy. He tries very hard to trick some children into getting close to him, but is foiled by the jungle animals. In the end the joke is on the crocodile.
