Christo Mantazis was raised at the Fleming estate, but not as an equal he was the maid’s kid. When caught at age 18 in a compromising position with Ruby her father kicked him off the property. Ruby’s father told her Christo was using her for her money and her social contacts to move up in the world. Not only did she not come to his defense, but she left Christo with the parting comment that she was using him to make her daddy mad and nothing more. Christo has more than overcome that embarrassing, insulting time in his life. He’s now a very rich man and can give his mother anything she would ever want. When Ruby’s mother died and left the estate equally to Ruby and Christo he sees the perfect chance to give his mom the one thing he knows would make her the happiest. He would have to deal with Ruby one last time, offer her top dollar for her half of the estate and give it to his mom. This should be easy enough and then he’ll never have to see her, again. Ruby, instead refuses to sell her half and he is left with a challenge that he didn’t see coming.

Ruby and Christo’s story was such a fun, emotional ride. My heart broke for Ruby as she learned the real story of her family knowing she could never talk to her mom and clear the air. She and Christo both had to deal with the past and re-think all that they thought they knew about the other. They had to learn to trust and love and communicate with one another. I really enjoyed the story and would definitely read more stories written by Barbara DeLeo.

An arranged marriage is a great idea, right? Both parties have their eyes wide open about what they’re getting into. Their brains aren’t clouded by unnecessary emotions. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. They know they’ll enjoy great sex because they had a hot affair together as teenagers (well this couple did, anyway). That’s always a bonus. Each has something the other wants. She gets a father and family security for the baby she’s carrying. She also gets to live in the house she grew up in, providing her baby with a family heritage and a connection with its roots. And him? He gets a daughter-in-law for his mother and a child for himself which a childhood illness has left him unable to get for himself. As Christo says himself., ‘everyone is a winner.’

But are they? Ruby has her doubts. Very serious doubts.Yes, Christo is the ideal man to give her everything she needs. The problem is that there has to be something more, just a little bit more, to turn a marriage from a cold contract into something special. And, unfortunately for Ruby, it’s just not there. Christo has come along way from being the son of the family servant which he once was, but the trouble is, he now thinks that his money can buy everything. And Ruby is here to tell him that it takes more than money and a neat arrangement to win her, her heart and her child. That’s the message which this story delivers.

It’s also Ruby’s story of discovery, the discovery of what her family was really like, how her father wasn’t the ideal which she had him made out to be. How her mother suffered and how she’d misjudged her. Many people unnecessarily idolize (or maybe idealize?) their families, especially their parents, when they reminisce about the golden days of their childhood. That’s because we tend to hide the harsh realities from our children if we love them, wanting to spare them pain. But revisiting the scenes of our childhood and reliving our childhood can be like a wake up call to the harsh realities of our existence. Especially about the sacrifices which our parents may have made for our sake. Once the veil is removed from our eyes, we begin to see things in a very different way. A saintly father and a wicked mother can become a deceptive father and a misunderstood mother if the lighting is changed and the insight is different. Ruby, on the brink of motherhood herself, starts to see her parents in their true colors albeit in hindsight. It is a learning process which changes her outlook significantly. It is now too late to meet her recently deceased mother, but still, in meeting her mother’s relatives and being with the woman who served her mother in her last days, she feels connected to the memory of her mother and finds peace through that. The desire to bring her child into this world and to bring up this child in her mother’s house becomes stronger as a result of this. The need to live her life on her own terms and not to live with regrets becomes stronger and deeper than ever.

This story is set in Auckland, New Zealand. The connection with the United States is through Ruby’s having lived in New York for a decade, working in the publishing industry. There are absolutely no scenes in the United States, we don’t even get a glimpse of it when Ruby returns there for a few days to settle her affairs before coming to settle in New Zealand. The entire story is concentrated in Auckland. Likewise, Ruby never seems to spare a thought for her late boyfriend, the man who made her pregnant. There is simply a reference to him as being a short term partner who was killed in a sudden accident before Ruby’s pregnancy was even confirmed. He is a necessary shadow in the story, but never referred to beyond his role as the father of the child. His death doesn’t seem to have affected Ruby in a negative way at all. I must confess, I found this a little strange. The loss which affects Ruby primarily is the loss of the parents, in particular, her mother. One wonders also, why she never returned to New Zealand after the death of her father. She returned when her widowed mother was ill, but returned in time to bury her Her mother’s death and father’s death seem quite unconnected and were not accidental.

The relationship between Ruby and Christo is given the main prominence. There is back story which is revealed as the story unfolds. It is a reunion story, and like many, the shoe is on the other foot at reunion time. Ruby, despite her English background on her father’s side, is the daughter of an Italian mother. Christo was the son of Stella, the Greek housekeeper. Ruby’s family was gentry. Christo, the son of a separated immigrant mother came nowhere near their social status. Ruby’s father’s discovery of their affair and Christo’s subsequent banishment from the house acts as the catalyst which changes the lives of both Ruby and Christo. Ruby buys into her father’s lie that Christo was using their relationship to advance socially and claims that she used Christo to annoy her father. She subsequently leaves home. Christo comes across as an amazing man, a prodigy almost. Being the son of a penniless immigrant woman, he grows up without a father, comes out winning from a bout of childhood cancer and his banishment from Ruby’s house causes him to work hard and make something of himself. He becomes the richest man in New Zealand.

Although this story is a romance in the traditional sense, with the promise of the happy ever after, you find yourself turning the pages to see if that HEA will happen. Or how the author makes it happen. Will Ruby be able to show Christo that in fact money can not buy everything, love included? Will he learn his lesson on time? Ruby is a woman who doesn’t just settle for things. She wants it all. The perfect solution and the love as well. She’s perfectly right.

I liked this author and look forward to her subsequent work.(less)

A cute, quick read! I liked the premise of the story and would have given it a higher rating, but just didn't connect with the characters. Especially Christo Mantazis, the hero. He had the makings of an alpha male that I wanted to love, but it fell short and I just couldn't connect with him no matter how much I really wanted to. As for Ruby Fleming, I liked her, but wanted her to stand up for herself more and unfortunately at times she came across as weak.

Christo and Ruby have known each other since they were kids. They grew up together in Ruby's family home, while Christo's mother took care of the Fleming family. They had a brief love affair as teenagers that ended very badly, causing Ruby to leave her New Zealand homeland and start a new life in New York. 10 years later Ruby is brought back to the family home due to her mother's death. She wants her home back, now that she is pregnant, alone and knowing that this is her child's birthright. Only to find out that her mother left the home to both herself and Christo.

Christo wants the only home his mother has ever been happy in and willing to do almost anything to get it for her. So what Christo thinks will be an easy transaction with Ruby turns out to be anything but, since Ruby wants the house as equally bad. During this time trying to figure out a solution, feelings and mutual attraction surface. They come to find out that the demise of their relationship so long ago was due to lack of trust and Ruby's manipulative father. Still not able to trust each other, but each wanting the house, Christo comes up with a marriage contract. A contract that would be perfect for the both of them. Christo gets the house, to be a father, a happy mother and in some ways Ruby. Ruby gets the security she wants for her and her child, plus the house. This is perfect right?? What more could they ask for?

The marriage contract is more of a business deal with benefits and Ruby quickly realizes that this is not what she wants! She wants a trusting and loving relationship for herself and her child. She wants this with Christo, but is he willing to let the past go and be able to trust and love Ruby again? If you are looking for a cute read on a rainy day then this would great! I give this book 2.5 stars.(less)

I really enjoyed this book. I loved that it took place in New Zealand, a place I don't typically read stories about...it was a nice change of pace. I found the concept of this, a 'contract' of marriage, so to speak, to save a house, a bit far fetched. But, hey, it's a book, where anything is possible. I was still able to enjoy it. Beautiful location, great story, a brilliant cast of characters, but when you put it all together, the sum total of it just doesn't work. I love when you try something somewhat out of your comfort zone and it pays off. That is exactly how it worked out for me with Contract for Marriage by Barbara DeLeo. Shortly after returning to New Zealand, Christo seeks her out and explains that he wants to keep her family's estate and give it to his mother, since it has been the place she has called home for most of her life. But after recently finding out that she is pregnant and that the father has unexpectedly passed away, Ruby wants nothing more than to return home to raise her child. Unbeknownst to Ruby, the ten years that they have been apart, Christo has built quite a successful life and has grown accustom to getting his way.

"To protect the things that he'd fought so hard to come by, he needed to stay on guard."

Ten years ago, Ruby and Christo had a major communication breakdown that broke them apart. As the death of Ruby's mother has brought them back together, the residual effects of their past continue to create communication and trust issues.

"But if he were to ever rely on Ruby, depend that she would have his back...that was when the crunch would come. When she'd show her true colors.
He could never afford to forget."

As her mother's will is revealed, Ruby learns of the help that Christo has provided to her mother over the years which had led her to leave half of the estate to Christo. The set up of the will was quite strange: whoever leaves the house first, forfeits it. So, the two are forced to spend a lot of time together while they work out an agreement. The more time they spend together, the more their feelings for one another surface.

"The promise of that touch was something she'd carried inside her, dreamed about for years, but now it felt secret and full of power, something she didn't know how to interpret."

Unfortunately, their resentment and lack of trust for one another plaques their relationship. Out of nowhere, Christo presents Ruby with a proposition. This completely took me by surprise and changed everything.

I really connected with both Ruby and Christo. However, Christo's dominance and need to control everything frustrated me. The revelation of family secrets that had aided in Ruby losing her relationship with Christo as well as her mother was heartbreaking.

I really enjoyed Contract for Marriage. Even though some parts seemed a bit far fetched, the dynamics of Ruby and Christo's relationship were very real. Contract for Marriage is a sweet and fairly short read that flows perfectly to keep you hooked.(less)

Pregnant and alone is a terrible feeling for any woman no matter the circumstances. But when you at least have somewhere to go then it shines a light on the situation.

This was a very sweet book. The writing was flawless and flowed very well and the plot was beyond intriguing. You can't help but sympathize with the MC's for all they've been through and how they've overcome many obstacles. Unfortunately for me, I just didn't click with the characters. So... first off - the cover - LOVE IT! After you read the story you will love it so much more! =)

Moving on... these characters - they have a really nice depth to them. I really liked the conflict shown between Ruby and Christo. I loved that they had a past that neither really wanted to face or talk about or even face within themselves. I thought how they were brought together again after a decade was sad but really good. It was all very believable and made the rest of the story really work well....more

Contract for Marriage's premise makes it sound like it's the perfect book for me. Cute, romantic and perfect for a light reading. And although in some departments this story delivered just that, in some others I was kind of left unsatisfied, wanting for more.

The first chapters of this story were a little bit too fast paced or rather too crammed with details that could have been presented later on in the narration and as a result I was left with a head full of unnecessary details. I was only in the second chapter of the story and I kind of needed to take notes to keep up with every new detail I learnt concerning the relationship between the two heroes and their families... It's not that those details weren't needed, I just felt that I could learn them later on along with the story. I kind of felt like I was reading an UF novel more than a contemporary one with an intricate world building. It wasn't that heavy, but you get the picture.

Another thing I found a little overwhelming at the beginning of the story was death's presence. The deaths occurring from the very beginning were just too much for me. Wasn't it enough that both Ruby's parents are dead, should the father of her unborn child die as well?They were all pretty young and died unexpectedly (apart from her father who I don't think I saw mentioning how he died or at what age). And to top things of, Christo, the hero, also had to fight cancer as a teenager, almost dying himself and not able to have kids because of his chemotherapy. All that is just too much. I was expecting a light read, not reading about so much death (yeah, I have a thing with death, I don't really like reading about it...)

So, you get that I had a little of a rough start with Contract for Marriage concerning some details of the whole story, but as I continued on reading, I had a hard time with the main couple as well. Ruby, is sweet and all, but she's too coward, too depending and ready to compromise without a fight. Christo's proposition to take care of her and her child in exchange for a marriage is one she accepts without much thinking. Take into consideration that she believes that he has wronged, betrayed and humiliated her in the past and the easy way she accepts to marry such a man just to have security for her and her child is something I just can't understand or like about her.

Christo on the other hand is the kind of hero I wanted to like because he was sexy and arrogant and with a bad boy attitude I usually die for but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't like him. He was just too arrogant, too calculative and dispassionate. He talks about his marriage and the possibility to have a family like it's a business plan and not something he would love to have. The part of the book where they discuss the pros and cons of a possible marriage between them was nothing close to romantic. It was pure business for both of them.

As you can understand, no matter how much I liked the premise of the story, I just couldn't connect to it primarily because of the main couple and then due to a few details.

The writing style on the other hand is pretty good and although the character development could have been a little better in overall, Contract for Marriage was a pleasant story, one that I'm pretty certain that if I could connect to in more levels, I would really enjoy. As it is, it's a story I read pleasantly but I was left unsatisfied in more than one levels. And it's a pity because the potential for a great story is right there.(less)

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting after buying it online last night. I liked the characters and setting and the storyline was engaging. My one "complaint" would be the fairly standard marriage of convience stipulation that the heroine doesn't want sex. I wish women in these books would recognize their own sexuality and demand the hero perform each and every night. I expected more from this book. It read like any other harlequin book which is not what I expected. The sensuality was good in the book, but what kept irritating me the whole time is the sexual sparks that were very wrong under such stressful emotional days the story is set in, plus, the hero pretty manipulated the heroine all the time. I loved two things about this book, the first fact that totally caught my eye was the setting, because almost every romance I read is either on USA or Greece. So it was a really nice touch to read this one on Oceania. So many beautiful places made this book a fresh romance.

I knew it was a wise idea to wait for a holiday weekend to read this book. You won't want to be interrupted when you step inside the world of Ruby and Christo. Barbara De Leo paints such a rich picture of the Auckland-based romance, that you almost feel the Summer breeze and the hot, humid nights she describes as the passionate characters re-enter one another's lives. There was such detail in the story, yet room for your imagination too! I can't wait to read the next book!

What a cute story! While Contract for Marriage was fairly predictable, it had an addictive quality that had me reading straight through in one sitting. I really loved the characters. Ruby and Christo were both great, and I just adored Stella and all of Ruby's family. They were all such a joy to read about. I was sad when this one ended as I wanted the story to just continue :) Barbara DeLeo is an author I'm anxious to see more from.

A really great love story about seconds chances and learning to trust and love unconditionally.

Ruby Fleming has grown up since dating Christo and in the process learns about her parents love story and what she wants for her love story.

Christo Mantazis was hurt by Ruby, but neither can forget the awful way the relationship ended years earlier.

Due to the death and will of Ruby's mother, she and Christo's must make some life decisions to find their happy ever after.

I don't why it took me like days to finish this, but the idea of the guy to be infertile is so heartbreaking, it was so touching that he's willing to give everything to the baby.

Honestly grading this 4 stars for Christo, for he will never have a child, yet is willing to love a child by the woman he loves so much.

A MUST READ!
A stunning debut book. Loved it! A deep, emotional read full of passion and heat. I easily attached myself to Ruby and adored being inside Christo's head. His alpha point of view is beautifully written. Couldn't put this book down!
Looking forward to all Ms DeLeo's books.

This was a pretty good little book. Short, fairly simplistic, and fluffy, but a decent read. It wasn't hard to see where every scene was going, but since I didn't go in expecting anything more than that, I wasn't disappointed. Worth reading to pass a pleasant hour or two.

Cute story, hardly any dramatic.

However it was quite the enjoyable read for the most part. I can't say it was the best novel ever but this is closely to what I would call a rainy day read. Enough to keep you busy and pleasured while its cold and gross outside.

Es nezinu kā es pati reaģētu, ja pārbrauktu mājās uz vecāku bērēm un atklātu, ka īpašums jādala ar kādu citu - citu, pret kuru tev ir sāpīgas atmiņas. Turklāt viņš šo īpašumu grib sev visu.
Nezinu, ja man nebūtu tik dziļas jūtas pret māju un iemesls par to cīnīties, es droši vien ņemtu naudu un laistos tālēs zilajās.
Bet galvenā varone tā nedarīja. Viņa cīnījās un dabūja ko gribēja (tā jāraksta, lai nebūtu spoileri).

This was a great book! I enjoyed the way the author was able to understand the emotions of the young pregnant woman. She hit the mood changes pretty well. I was crying like a baby by the end of this! I highly recommend it!

Very disappointing, very predictable. You do not get to know the characters enough to care about them at all. Was tempted not to finish it, but I kept HOPING it would get better! No such luck.

I really enjoyed this one. The characters were really believable and even though the situation was pretty out of the ordinary I could still believe that they both wanted the house so much.
