Myths and Rhymes

The poems in this volume are vehicles for me to share something of my psychic journey. They are more chant than narrative. They are meant in evoke mystery rather than communicate settled ideas. Following a stream of consciousness, I allowed images and thoughts to coalesce. They are not first drafts, but constructs made from the original jottings. Rhythm is important. Many ...more

William Poe's collection of poetry called Myths and Rhymes was part of his rehab recovery process. Poe creates interesting and unique lines that bring together his drug problems and coming to terms with his sexuality. There is some of the disjointedness (in a good way) that reminds me of William S. Burroughs, but with the additional layer of escaping from what he calls a cult, the Unification Church. There are many references to Adam and Eve, references to Sodom, Greek Mythology, vague drug refe ...more

I received this little golden book of poems thanks to the giveaway program of Goodreads.com.

I admit I didn't think I would enjoy this book as much as I did when I picked it up. After a few pages of reading, however, I was taken in by the great poems that tie so many different legends, myths, cultures, and styles.

Reading it was a pleasure, and it was a shame that it lasted such a short moment for me. I will pick this little book up again and again whenever I have the time, enjoying every moment

I received this book as a Goodreads first-reads giveaway.

I am not normally a poetry reader, but I must say I enjoyed this book very much.

I read it all in one sitting, and found the poems to be very powerful.

I recommend it.

An interesting book, Enjoyable in it's own way.
I normally do not read this type of book, but it came into my possession, so I gave it a shot,
I would recommend this book for those in search of meaning in chaos.

Three Stars (out of Five)

In the introduction to Myths and Rhymes, poet William Poe encourages readers of his poetry collection to “allow the words to flow as much for their rhythm as for their meaning.” This is good advice to follow. The poems are clearly deeply personal, and their meaning often seems
purposely obscured. When read aloud, however, no matter the meaning, it’s clear that these poems are meant to be heard. Mos

Um, what to say. I specifically asked to be included in a Goodreads giveaway for Myths and Rhymes so I did get the book for free and thought it necessary, therefore, to provide a review.

I had high hopes for this book. The synopsis on Goodreads said that it had been written from the author's notes while he went through drug rehab. I expected more emotion to come through in his writing as a result. Although I understood some of his lines were relating to his rehab and some to his sexuality (coming

Poetry is a difficult thing to review. The positive attributes we give to novels (the quality of the story or characters for example) are less present and instead aspects like meter and word selection move to the forefront. It is also difficult to discredit poetry because, at its heart, it is a very personal thought from the author. That being said, I didn't care for Myths and Rhymes very much.

Overall the writing felt disjointed to me. Poe's constant insertions of mythological or biblical themes
