This superb account of life on the Great Blasket Island off the west coast of Kerry, written as the nineteenth century draws to its close and the dawn of a new era trespasses on the lives of its small community, is both a shocking and captivating read.

Here is the first complete translation of Tomas O'Crohan's autobiography An tOileanach, first published in 1929. This editi

Interesting and honest account of living in the Blasket. The famine and the first world war are barely mentioned as they had little impact on his life. Simple account of a time long gone.

I spent a few hours on Great Blasket Island last spring, a beautiful wild place abandoned since 1953, the year I was born. I love the simple, poetic language and stories of Tomas O Chrionann, told in his native Gaelic language, for peopling this wild landscape, for sharing a way of living, incredibly harsh and beautiful, that no longer exists.

Having read Robin Flower's translation of An t-Oileánach and several other books about the Blaskets, I've just started reading this new translation and, from the very first pages, I've found what I consider two mistakes.
First of all, when putting name to his brothers and sisters, in this new translation it says: "I also had two brothers, Patrick Donal and Tomás Donal". On the other hand, the previous translation said just "Patrick and myself, Tomás". I find it difficult to believe there was anot

This account of growing up in rural island setting was at times monotonous and at others thrilling. Even during the dull moments, the book is beautiful. You are shown an eyewitness chronicling of a way of life that has since died off, and knowing this fact leaves the reader slightly haunted and having to deal with a very raw form of finality. Don't pass up this book; it's well worth the experience.

Simple. Plain. Honest. A snapshot of life in the Blaskets in full detail. People are born, people work, and people die. In between they have some drinks.
