While he was reading a book about Africa, Joe's wife asked him how he would like to celebrate his forthcoming 60th birthday. Casually he said "I'd like to go to Timbuktu", and thought no more about it. She sent him. This is the true story of that solo overland journey from Dakar in Senegal, to Timbuktu in Mali, a return distance of around 3000 miles, with many excitements ...more

I’ve lived and traveled in Africa, but never made it to Timbuktu. So I was thrilled to come across a copy of Ticket to Timbuktu by Joe Lindsay. The next best thing besides traveling to a place is visiting it by proxy when reading a compelling travel memoir.

I was not disappointed. Ticket to Timbuktu is nothing fancy, nothing overly dramatic, but a very honest account of one man’s trip from his home in Scotland to Timbuktu and back. Going there had been a childhood dream, and when his wife gave hi

Just finished reading this Memoir about Joe Lindsay's journey to Timbuktu. Interestingly enough, as a child, my father always used to tease me about taking us to Timbuktu (which he pronounced TEN-BUCK-TWO), which, of course, I did not have a clue as to its location. Facing illness and a few dangerous ...more

Loved this book from start to finish. Brought back great memories of driving from The Gambia to Dakar and back for a few days holiday.

So intriguing.

I loved it. The sights were described so beautifully that I felt I was there as well. It took a lot of courage to attempt this trip alone.
