'Those McIntyres are nothing but trouble!' When the McIntyre family moves in next door, Eva is intrigued - it is the first interesting thing to happen for ages. But her ever protective Dad - even more protective since Eva's mum died - does not agree. And the McIntyres are certainly noisy! Shelves: children-s-books
Caldecott says she loves to write about ordinary children doing extraordinary things and it’s one of the things that I have loved about the previous two books I’ve read. And if that’s what you love about her books than this is no different, Eva and Jamie are two extremely likeable ordinary children. I’m impressed with the way that Caldecott’s characters are always so different and yet completely believable. In this book I related to Eva so much. The first scene where she spies her new neighbours ...more

Great fun kids' adventure from a skilled writer of family drama

Elen Caldecott is one of the best writers of kids' contemporary adventures. She excels at writing sympathetically and not patronisingly about kids in non-traditional family situations, giving them interesting adventures so that the point of the story is not "look, here's a kid from a non-traditional family", but rather "here's a kid doing X".

I especially like the anti-judgmental message in this novel, in which our main character, Eva

Eva has an over protective Dad, for good reason. Aware that she needs to get out and meet friends he allows her to get involved with a community project to do up an old park lodge so that it can be turned into a centre for young people. Shy and nervous Eva encounters a mix of children but bonds quicker with her next-door neighbour, Jamie McIntyre, who has also been signed up to help. Jamie’s loud and colourful family are not liked by Eva’s dad and she struggles with pleasing her father who ...more

Eva lives with her overprotective Dad with her Gran to help out when he is at work. Her Mum died in a ski accident a couple of years before and her Dad has strict rules what she can do and can’t do. She has always accepted this until the McIntyres move in next door. They have constant parties, loud music, plenty of beer and barking dogs, and Eva sees a boy her age escaping his family chaos by lying alone on the shed roof.

She meets him at a holiday programme – to renovate an old building to a lo

Not overly crazy about the ending but then I like things nice and tidied up, I hate having story threads left out there....but a quick little read. More girly book that boy book but some boys make like it. The cover is cute!

A wonderful book which is funny yet deals with issues of friendship, loss, not judging others too quickly and generosity.
I enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

Not what I thought it would be from the title and cover. I was expecting a comedy but this was a very moving story. I will certainly be recommending this as part of the Bookbuzz scheme!
