Keller, an introspective fellow, is your basic Urban Lonely Guy. He collects stamps. He used to have a dog, until the dog walker walked off with him. Now he soldiers on alone.

It's his profession that sets him apart. He's a hit man. He kills strangers for a living.

And he's a Guilty Pleasure for an ever-increasing number of readers. "I don't think I ought to like Keller," r

The post 9-11 world made things difficult for Keller. He'd spent days helping the rescue effort, doling out food to the workers until the Red Cross moved in and made it unpalatable for him. He didn't like flying anymore. All the I.D. requirements weren't good for a hit man. Too many trails left.

He gets a job and drives from New York To Phoenix. It's a bitch of a job. The target is retired, lives alone in a gated community with it's own golf course, and seldom cones out. Ten foot high adobe walls

A long short story dealing with Keller’s reaction to the events of 9/11 and their impact on his life as a hitman. For this particular job, he must drive across country and come up with an innovative way to take out his target who lives in a seemingly impregnable gated community. Along the way, we’re treated to Block’s ruminations on American culture and life. Entertaining as always.

I like Block, but in his series, the backstory is often repeated a bit ad nauseum.

I've always loved Keller...even if he is a hit man. He's one with a conscience. I enjoyed this story, as it takes place shortly after 9/11 and I know all too well what it's like living in NYC at that time and how we ALL had to make adjustments in our lives after that, even Keller. Block never disappoints, but some stories are better than others. This is one of the better ones. I particularly like is travelling companion. Nice touch!

Started to reread this and it all came back. Good story with universal theme of getting on with life when the world makes a sudden and wide reaching change.
