"Dirk Hayhurst has done it again. . .Turns out he's a starter and a closer."

—Tim Kurkjian, ESPN

As a major and not-so-major league pitcher, Dirk Hayhurst has learned to master more than striking out batters. While waiting for his name to be called in the bullpen, he honed his gifts as a storyteller, one the New York Times calls the "best writer in a baseball uniform." In th

This is a book of what could be considered the outtakes from Out of My League - fun to read if you liked the final product, but ultimately you can see why not everything makes it into a book - can also appreciate how editors shape material, as there are passages here that grammatically are almost incomprehensible (who did what to whom). I am also guessing that there was an automatic spellchecker and no one really read through it before it was published as an e-book, as there are errors that real ...more

Dirk Hayhurst is a terrific and hilarious writer, and if you're at all into baseball, I highly recommend you pick him up. Wild Pitches is a sort of Deleted Scenes collection from his previous book, Out of My League, and it's more of the same. That is, awesome.

This book is exactly like the B-sides from your favorite bands last album. If you are a fan, you will enjoy, otherwise it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There were some gems in here, but there was a lot of stuff you understood why it didn't make the cut.

But still, got to love the Garfoose.

Hayhurst is one of my favorite baseball writers. Out Of My League and The Bullpen Gospels were extremely compelling. The world of minor league baseball is so fascinating, and Hayhurst captures it well. I'm only giving this book 3 stars because it seems to be full of stuff that didn't make the cut for his other books. It's like hanging out with that hilarious friend on a day where they have the flu. It's still them, but you're definitely not getting their best. If you haven't read Hayhurst, start ...more

I really enjoyed reading Dirk Hayhurst's first two autobiographical books, "The Bullpen Gospels" and "Out of My League," both about being a longtime pitcher in minor and major league baseball. "Wild Pitches," which I could find only on Kindle (a bargain at less than $5), contains outtakes from "Out of My League." It is a fast and enjoyable read, and will whet your appetite for the first two full books. I came to think of "Wild Pitches" as the special bonus material to the Main Feature of "Out of ...more

If you like reading Dirk Hayhurst, and if you're a baseball fan it's hard to imagine not liking his stuff, then go buy Wild Pitches, a just released ebook with material that he had to cut from Out of My League because of space. At $3.82 you just can't lose.

My reviews of his first two books are here and here. Very funny, insightful guy.

His book chronicling his injury-plagued year with the Blue Jays is slated for 2014 release.

Nice supplement to his second book.

A little disappointed with this one. I loved Hayhurst's two prior books, The Bullpen Gospels and Out of My League. Wild Pitches was an e-book with previously edited excerpts from his prior books. Still, it is good for a laugh or two and I can't wait for his next book.

I find something very refreshing about Hayhurst's writing. He's not the finest writer to ever take up baseball as his subject but he comes across as being so likeable that it's hard not to enjoy his work.

This guy is a wonderful story teller. Can't wait until he puts something together for the big screen.
