After losing his lover in a tragic motorcar accident, Leslie Atwater goes about the motions but doesn’t really feel alive. Not without Edward. In a time where “one of us” was a euphemism for being gay, Leslie and Edward managed to live a quiet, private life together, but nothing prepares Leslie for a world without his partner.

During the day, Leslie works as a clerk in a mo

At first I had a really hard time with this book. I was about to give up just a few pages in, I thought some of the sentences were awkward, and the plot didn’t grab me, but it was so short so I thought I should give it a try anyway. And I’m glad that I did, because the plot did grab a hold of me after a few pages. I’m still feeling that I’m a bit more pessimistic than the rest of you, I didn’t like the secondary characters and I wanted a different. But I guess you can’t have everything you wish ...more

Bomber’s Moon, Weep Not For The Past, and A Manx Tale, all set at the beginning of World War II, offer the plight of lovers who have been separated. At such a time as the war, this gives a sense of suspense as well as puzzle to each story. The reader forgets the other word in this series, Liars, until the very end. And while each novel is not based totally on a lie, mistruth or myth is prominent.
Skill is demonstrated in word and story.
All three books are written by someone who has control of the

London during the Blitz, when Nazi aircraft invaded nightly, most successfully when the moon shown brightly on the bombers' targets in the great city. Edward, Leslie's lover was killed on such a night, according to the police report. His death was not caused by a bombing, however, but by a road accident followed by an explosion. Therein lies a the mystery drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into a scene of international intrigue between England and Germany: traitors, spies, sabatoge, agents ...more

I love the setting of this story in WWII during the London Blitz. I love Leslie's character as he went through each day mindlessly as if stuck in a vicious loop. Worked in the day, returned home to a dark apartment, kept alert all through the nights for wailing warnings on approaching Nazi bombers, shepherd those under his care as he took up voluntary work as a Warden in his neighbourhood. And all through this hellish way of life, mourning for his lover who was taken abuptly from him. But how ...more

Very short descriptive headed passages make the book read quite quickly. I loved the descriptions in Blitz ridden London, very evocative. At first a definite 4* but the ending left me a bit confused.however, did really enjoy it.
Leslie is existing in a war-time life without Edward - work, air-raids, memories. But the visions of Edward seem real, and as he emerges from the fugue of recent bereavement, a number of issues don't make sense, making Leslie question both his sanity and Edward's death.
