Great guide book - straight up and honest. Very detailed too, written by people that live there. Definitely the best guide book I've had in awhile. (I hear the rest of the 'Revealed' books for the other islands are just as good).

Aaarghe, yes, this book is useful. Yes, it's easy to use, well written, informative and clear. The maps and illustrations, the sectioning, yes, yes, it's all great.
But the book's smugness with its insider status is endlessly annoying. And the attitude of priveledge and entitlement drives me nuts. I DESERVE to go tramping across "No Trespassing" signs! I'm a tourist! I've got more money than these ignorant locals. And besides, they're not taking advantage of all this great stuff!...more

This is one of the best travel books I've ever read. It's organized really well, includes great information on Kauai's beaches and trails, and tells you how to find some lesser known spots around the island. One local admonished us for using it, telling us that "this book has killed a lot of people, so we boycott it". We thanked her for telling us, but I thought it was a ridiculous warning. Doughty may map out some hard-to-reach and sometimes dangerous spots, but he always points out t...more

We carried this around EVERYWHERE and crammed as many things as possible from this guidebook. It was fabulous and 99% correct about where stuff is, and we easily found most everything we looked for.
We stayed in Kapa'a, and had a car rental. It was so easy from there to go to ANY part of the island under one hour, from the west coast all the way to the Hanalei bay.
Such a beautiful island!!

The best kauai guidebook. Got great tips for places to eat, clear maps, and lots of informationa about activities. Kauai has had a LOT of drownings so it is important to do your research to choose the right beaches for swimming and this book has that information. They are also not afraid to say when a place has gone downhill. Written by locals.

Excellent resource for visiting the island. This is the new version, not the 1999 version. There's a book for every island in Hawaii, and this guy is an awesome writer to tells it like it is.

Like the Maui book by the same author, the real assessment will have to wait until I go and put it all to the test.
For some reason, I found the author's attitude and asides less grating. You can sense his deep love and appreciation of his home island and the perpetual sense of discovery in the various natural wonders and attractions.

This book, and the other Hawaiian islands the authors have covered are the best travel guide books I have ever used.

LOVED IT!!! My husband and I camped in Kauai for two weeks and very much enjoyed this guide book. It is the best I've ever used.
We hiked a ton, visited beautiful waterfalls, saw amazing views, and snorkeled with sea turtles, went to a great luau, had great Hawaiian Ice and saw a beached sea lion all because of this book. When we were in Kauai, we were talking about places we had been using the guide book and locals would say, "Where is that?"

Anyone going to Kauai.
You MUST buy this book if you're going to Kauai. Anyone that says "I hate guidebooks, I like to find things spontaneously" is nuts. We kept this book right in the rental car and carried it everywhere on Kauai with us. Even though we stayed on the North Shore, we never would have found Hideaways beach (and it was on the same property as our condo) and Tunnels beach (the best beach ever) without it. The restaurant reviews were right on, along with everything else. Buy it, read it, bring ...more
