It’s 1991, and a group of English football fans are driving across Belgium; their trip takes them through the site of a former battle, and that’s when a strange sequence of events begins. For Dennis and Allan, colleagues who cordially dislike each other, this means journeying further still – into what appears to be the past, and into the lives of two men who travelled this ...more

An interesting and thought-provoking shortish novel. We begin in the early 1990s with a group of football fans travelling across Europe in a minivan - with all the banality that brings, with junk food and dodgy restrooms and getting on each other's nerves. But then as the group cross Belgium the wartime past begins to encroach on the present, and two of the characters find themselves living double-lives.

The supernatural elements are deftly handled, and intriguing to read. How the story in the pa

Sad, funny and poignant by turns, this is a gentle romance by one of my favourite m/m authors . Sharply-drawn characters and a touch of the supernatural elevate it above most offerings in this genre. I'm still mentally turning the pieces of the puzzle round and round in my mind to see how they fit – ghost story, historical romance, meditation on fate and chance? Though the central mystery is precisely documented there's enough space for the reader to put her own interpretation on events, and ...more

Recommended Book!

The desperation and sheer awfulness of World War 1 came over so well that I really felt like I was there, and as much as I liked the comedy of the first part of the book, the pervading sadness and waste of it all sucked me in and made it impossible for me to put the book down. At times I found I was reading through tears at the futility of it all. At first I thought this book was about time travel, but in retrospect I think it’s more about reincarnation, the chance to relive a m

Really enjoyed this book. Initially, I was a little sceptical as to how the temporal discontinuities would be handled, but it worked really well. A little contrived towards the end, but really good.

“In another life, when we were soldiers” goes the saying, and this book is a prominent champion of its truth. Dennis disapproves of Allan with a passion; Allan couldn't care less about Dennis if he tried. Forced to spend endless hours together in a van, in the company of even more English sports fans, each carrying their own baggage, this road trip could turn into a war zone with the flick of a switch.

When their unexpected detour takes them somewhere in the middle of Belgian nowhere though, Den
I wasn't quite sure what this book would be about. It is definitely not just another contemporary m/m romance, nor a true historical either. But it spans two sets of lives--those cut short in WWI and those of a group of friends traveling through Belgium in 1991. In a Belgian battlefield, the past mixes with the 1991 present to make a connection which affects characters from both eras.

The feeling of the past is so well done my heart ached for the waste of young lives. But there is also a feeling
