REALLY intense and powerful. I read it all this afternoon, really devouring it.

Alex Katsumoto grew up as the caretaker for his schizophrenic mom, so he knows exactly how hard that life can be...and when he is diagnosed with the symptoms of schizophrenia himself, he pushes aside the love of his life to save her from becoming his caretaker.

Of course, he thinks he's protecting Madison, ripping himself apart for her sake - but she sees it as incredibly condescending, as he's denying her the right t

Boy, this is gonna be one sequel! Get ready to feel pain, frustration, hurt, love and WOW. :)
After finishing Castles on the Sand, I read the excerpt for its continuation Love in Darkness. This story is from Alex's POV and involves his struggles with his worst nightmare. His fears have been realized, and in an attempt to protect those he loves, pushes everyone away. In the interim of the book (about 3 years), we learn through experiences with an excellent supporting cast, that Alex has become an extraordinary man. Through his good works and his faith, he has completely immersed himself i ...more

eading books by E.M. Tippetts is like giving myself a present. I'm a big fan of her writing. Love In Darkness is a sequel to Castles on the Sand. I fell in love with Alex and Madison in the first book and was really looking forward to the continuation of their story. Love in Darkness wasn't really the sequel I had expected; it was even better. I didn't realize until I started reading that this book was from Alex's POV and I didn't know he was going to have a schizophrenic break either. Having hi ...more

This is book 2 in the ‘Shattered Castles’ series, and kicks off around 2 years after the end of book 1 – ‘Castles in the Sand’.
**Warning – some unavoidable spoilers for book 1 in the series – ‘Castles in the Sand’.
It’s 2 years since Alex broke Madison’s heart when he left her to go off on a mission, but now he’s back. Madison never stopped loving Alex and has written to him fr
This was probably the most heart wrenching story I have ever read.
I immediately fell in love with Alex Katsumoto in the first book Castles on the Sand. I wanted nothing more than for him to have a happily ever after. So reading through Love in Darkness was extremely difficult for me; especially since it was in his POV. His situation is not an easy one and reading through his struggling experiences broke my heart over and over again.
The entire book, I just wanted to hold Alex in my arms and tel

Um, Wow, that was brilliant!

Now I liked book 1. It was sweet and Madison was so lovely that she was a delight to read about. But I wasn't completely in love with it. It didn't wow me or affect me all that deeply. I went into book 2 with a little hope that them being older would make the romance a bit more intense, and that me already knowing the characters would make me care more about them. Then I realised it was Alex'

I would not read this review if you have not read the first book in the series: Castles on the Sand. There are some minor spoilers as well.

I keep on flip floping back and forth between 3 & 4 stars for this review. This book had a lot of serious content dealing with mental illness. I keep going back & forth because it was a little too dark for me and I'm not sure how much I really enjoyed it. But then I thi

When I started this book I thought it was going to be a great happy HEA book about Alex and Madison but it wasn't. It was so much more.

If you ever read the book Still Alice and you got to see and live through the eyes of an Alzheimer's person this was what is what like with Alex. You got to see, breathe, hear and live the life of someone with schizophrenia.

I do not know a lot about mental illness and disabilities but I thought this was a beautifully told story about loving someone so much it bre

This sequel takes place 2 years after Castles on the Sand. Madison and Alex are baptized and go on their mission. But Alex feels that he started inherit her mom mental illness, schizophrenia. Therefore he thinks that it's best to break his relationship with Madison because he doesn't want to burden her with his illness.

Most of the characters are back and couples of them quite surprise me with their changes. I still think that Alex and Madison are meant to be together, despite of Alex

When the author sent me this book to beta read, she didn't send a synopsis. I had no idea what I was getting into. It took over my whole day. I was rooting for Alex in book 1, rooting for him to get the girl and the happy ending he deserved. This is the remainder of his story and it will grip you roughly by the shoulders and might not let you go. There are so many things I could talk about in this review. Alex's darkly funny sense of humor. His selflessness when it comes to those he loves (and e ...more

This was the second book in the Shattered Castles Series. It takes place 2 years after Castles on the Sand ended. It's a sad story about true love and forgiveness. I think this book was a bit darker than the first one. It was from Alex's POV. This story deal with mental illness, and the effects that mental illness can have on someone and their friends and family. I think I would have liked a bit more romance, and again, I could ha

Oh, wow. This book wasn't what I was expecting. Don't ask me what I was expecting because I don't know for sure, it just wasn't this. Helpful, right?

First off, I need to say that there are references to the LDS faith in this book. The main characters have both served as missionaries and this is mentioned along with some other church related things (going to church) but there isn't anything preachy about this book. It's not like many Christian fiction books where there is religious things in abun

I have another varied review today! I have read past titles from Tippetts, but they were her chick lit books. I was interested to read what else she had put out there, so I accepted a review request for Love in Darkness. Clearly this is not my niche genre, which is fine. I like to read outside of chick lit too, but sometimes I was having trouble identifying with the book and really getting invested in it. I also kept feeling like I was missing something. There was a little voice niggling at me t ...more

Love in Darkness is the second book in the Shattered Castles series. I have not read the first book in this series, but do own a copy and plan to go back and read it. This book gives a glimpse into the life of a young adult male with schizophrenia.
I was expecting a run of the mill romance from this book, but go so much more. Alex is a guy who has schizophrenia, and is so in love with a girl that he will do anything for her; even remove himself from he

Love in Darkness is book two in this series. You do not have to have read book one as they flash back and you get the gist of it. Alex and Madison have been separated for two years. Each fulfilling mission trips for their Mormon church. Within weeks of their reunion Alex suffers his first psychotic break down. Delaying the reunion and forcing Alex to take a look at their relationship. Does Madison really know and understand the life she is buying into by being ties to Alex. A life of uncertainty ...more
Firstly I’d like to thank the author for sending me this eBook to read and give an honest review. This is the sequel to Castles on the Sand which I also read and reviewed. I really enjoyed the previous book and have often thought about the story and its characters so when I found out about this sequel I was very keen to read it!

The first few pages confused me a little but I soon realised what was happening and after Alex gave a quick recap of events from the first book I was completely on track.
This is the second story in the Shattered Castles Series and I think I liked it better than the first one. This story picks up a couple of years after the first one left off. This installment centers primarily around Alex and Madison and is told from Alex's POV. Most of the side characters from the first one are absent from this one or play much smaller roles. I liked having the story from Alex's POV because I like stories that are told in male perspective since there aren't many of them. I like ...more
Hero is back sooner than expected from his 2-year mission in Japan due to his psychotic breakdown. His ex-girlfriend heroine is also back from her 2-year Mormon mission trip and wants to see him but he refuses to have any contact with her. His psychotic episode makes him more resolute in his decision to not reconcile with her. It’s not so easy when there are many reminders of how good she could be for him. But as his schizophrenic mother worsens & his mental health is still in question, what ...more

A dark and lonely vision from the mind of a new schizophrenic. A story told from the point of view from Alex Katsumoto a teen tyrant now turned Mormon who grew up looking after his mother who has a severe case of schizophrenia.

The second book in the Shattered Castle series we are focused on Alex, half American and half Japanese. Alex grew up looking after is mom, with no help from the community or even school Alex was piratically a mute until he started

This was a beautiful and heartbreaking story. In the beginning I wondered if I could possibly like it as much as I did the first one. When things start going bad for Alex, I decided that no it was impossible for me to like this book as much as I did the first one. Who wants to fall in love with this beautiful amazing couple only to read the second book and find things going so downhill so fast. But, I was wrong. This book is

This book was amazing! It takes place two years after the firs concludes. Alex has developed schizophrenia and comes home, only to isolate Madison and cause himself to spiral into numerous psychotic episodes. He feels he is protecting her from the type of life he had its his mother, but what he doesn't realize is that he needs her to keep himself from that fate. We learn that Alex has become somewhat of a hero in his small t

A truly beautiful and heart wrenching sequel to Emily Mah Tippetts 'Castles on the Sand'. Continuing 2 years after the end of Castles on the Sand,'Love in Darkness' starts with Alex returning from a 2 year mission in Japan having suffered a psychotic breakdown (realizing that he is suffering from the same illness as his mother) and telling Madison that he can no longer be with her because he doesn't think he is worthy of her love *bawling eyes out*. I gave Love In Darkness four heart-shattering leaves. Okay so to tell you the truth, I dove into this one right after reading the first one Castles on the Sand. I didn’t even read the synopsis, I just knew I needed more Alex and Madison. Well, I was in for a HUGE surprise. It’s been two years since we last saw Alex and Madison. Alex gives us recaps in the form of flashbacks. M

This is not a book I would normally choose to read. I am at an age where I crave lighthearted reads to pass the time. The author asked if anyone could review her book; I volunteered.

At first, I reacted to the seriousness of the topic: Mental Illness. Yes, the taboo subject. This book is the evolution of a young love into early maturity, while facing the stigma, complications, and commitment of loving a schizophrenic. It deals with

5 Stars- A struggle for normalcy that could never be

“Love in Darkness” is the sequel to “Castles in the Sand”, of the Shattered Castle series by E.M. Tippetts. In “Castles in the Sand” Alex leaves Madison, the love of his life, to serve on a mission with his church. During this time period the two correspond very frequently as “friends”. “Love in Darkness” occurs two years later with Alex returning to his home town of Pelican Bluffs. Madison wants to resume their relationship but Alex had other

I was given this arc from the New Adult Book club here on Goodreads for a review.I give this book 3 and a half stars.

This was a good emotional read. Right from the beginning Alex's character drew me in during his first psychotic break. I really felt for him because of the struggle he went through growing up. He was the sole person to care for his schizophrenic mother and through that, he was a total loner.

Wow I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first one! This book was a lot more real than the first, even though that means it is more dark.

What I liked:
I really liked Alex and how he grows throughout the book.
As someone who studied psychology in college, I tend to have a soft spot for books with mental illness themes. I also found this book more realistic than most dealing with mental illness.
I love the author's writing st
