I had high hopes for The Earth Directive. The premise is simple and attention grabbing - the crew of a space ship are wakened by a distress call from Earth. The message is at least five years old, and it will take years more to get back. The war doesn't take that long to find them and they are attacked by the aliens.

That is where the book goes off the rails. Even with a ship that is obsolete by Earth standards, they trounce the aliens with no effort. The story becomes a list of human victory wit
