Lindy is uncertain of her new beachfront home. The house looks like a tall bug, and her best friend is miles away, back in Chicago. When her parents are stranded on the mainland during a storm, Lindy hears a cry for help. A mermaid is stuck in the tidepool! Suddenly, her new house is a lot more exciting, because Lindy has new friends - and lots of new underwater adventures to enjoy.

Mermaids in the Backyard is a stand-alone chapter book from Random House’s Stepping Stones series, and though I am
beginning chapter book that will appeal to those who like mermaid stories. Lindy and her parents move to the seaside, to a 3-story house built on stilts that Lindy dubs the "bug house." Lindy's room is on the top floor and looking out at the sea during a storm, she thinks she sees a person in need of rescue. When she goes to investigate, it's not a person but a mermaid. Lindy Drylander, as the mermaid sisters call her, makes friend with the mersisters and their pet sea horse, Finneus, and Lindy ...more
When Lindy moves to a new house in a new town, she is sad and lonely, missing her old home and friends. When she is left alone during a tempestuous storm, Lindy makes a shocking discovering practically in her own backyard. Are the creatures she meets for real? Or is she dreaming? Maybe this new place isn't so bad after all?
My son enjoyed the story very much and his favorite part was the visit in the ocean with the mersisters.
