And I think I need to do another proper review because this series just keeps changing. And I love it.

----

So a few things:

- This volume is not my favorite. It doesn't really show what Pandora Hearts is about.
- Nothing is what it seems. Nothing. No, seriously, NOTHING is what it seems.
- If you're reading this online, you'll have to put up with the not so accurate translations and spellings. It gets better later on, though.
- The art evolves. It becomes so pretty, you might faint.
- Don't go...more

This is officially the first manga I've ever read. I don't usually read this kind of stuff - comic books, manga, even heavily illustrated books - because I prefer using black printed words on a page to imagine what I'm reading about.

But goodness, I just loved it. I almost would say it's 5-star to me, just because the characters and the story were so good - I can't help it, but I adore poor Oz and his predicament (and Break, I love Break) - but I'm a newbie here and I'll stick with my first impre...more

I will give a proper review about the manga volumes, characters, and plot once I read all the volumes online that are avalible.Edit: I have now finished all of the chapters that are avalible online. This review will be VERY VERY long.

Oz, a boy who enjoys mischief and pranks with his servant Gilbert, and his younger sister Ada. He lives in a mansion, and has a good life. He is about to turn 15 and have his first coming of age ceremony. Completly ignoring the fact that his father hates him, he at...more

I've been having neck pain lately, which keeps me up at night. So, I decided what better way to divert myself than by rereading a most excellent manga series?

Pandora Hearts is one of those series that I knew I would love once I gave it the time it was due. It's complex, both in plot and the way the story unfolds. It's easy to get lost between volumes (when you're waiting months in between releases). What makes it great, though, is that it's a really wonderful series for rereading. You simply can...more

Ok, I first came across this series when I had become up to date with another. I was scrolling down the 'Popular Manga' list and then I saw it. The first thing that got me was the cover. The art on the title page was quite pretty so I decided I'd give it a try. When I first tried reading it, I was sort of confused so I abandoned it for a while. About 4 months later, for lack of anything better to do I tried it again...

Comments are like crack, so please support my addiction here.

Having finished volume 1, I only have one major thought - what the bloody hell is going on?

This is the second time I'm reading this. The first time I read it was directly after reading Dogs and it really altered the way I digested this volume. The second time was right after reviewing Soul Eater, and we all know how that review went, so my second reading of this volume was a lot more favourable than my earlier opinion of it.

When I first started reading this book, my friend Chloe (who reccommended it to me) told me that "Everything I believed was true was in fact wrong."
I'm sure there was more capslock in there. Regardless, back when I started this specific volume I had no idea of how much that would prove to be absolutely correct.
I knew nothing.
Because of this, I spent half of my time reading this manga going "What the fuck is going on?"
And yet, even though everything was completely confusing for 60+ chapters (sorr...more

Pandora Hearts

Type of book: Manga/Comic

Written and drawn by Jun Mochizuki

Pandora Hearts tells the story of 15 year old Oz Vessalius, who is the heir of House Vessalius, one of four dukedoms in the country he lives in. He has an easygoing happy life with best friend and loyal valet Gil, but soon all is changed when, on the day of his Coming of Age Ceremony, he is condemned of a sin he does not know of and cast into a dark void called the Abyss, only ever spoken of in legends. Though the Abyss was...more

I cannot begin to describe how amazing this series is. But because you probably want to know why I gave this series five stars, I'll try.

First, the artwork is gorgeous. Whether it's an action scene, an emotional moment, or horror and madness, the artwork always delivers. Though the comic relief isn't as frequent as some other series, it's well done. What could have easily been jarring flows just as well as the rest of the plot.

As for the story, I have never seen a more twisted take on Alice in W...more

I chose to read this book because I love Black butler, which is similar to this. The plot of the story is a boy named Oz Vessalius is cast into another dimension called the 'Abyss' where he meets a 'chain' called B-Rabbit(a.k.a Alice). Oz, in order to escape the Abyss, made a contract with Alice, who wishes to find her memories, and Oz wishes to find out what his 'sin' was for being thrown into the Abyss. My favorite quote in the book was, "Even though there are lots of things I don't understand...more

Word of advice: endure the fast pace and the confusing details for the first few chapters. Then you're set, because as time goes on, Pandora Hearts gets better. Seriously. Right now, PH is so good I check almost every day to see whether it has an update, amongst Black Butler, Kuroko no Basuke, and the other cool manga.

Pandora Hearts starts off with Oz who is about to have his coming-of-age ceremony. Everything was going to plan and he even met a cute girl. But suddenly the ceremony was interrupt...more

Its interesting and strange, I'll tell you that first. I love fantasy but I'm all about urban fantasy so Pandora Hearts was a little hard to grasp since it is set in its own world. Oz Vessalius is our main character, he is a 15 year old boy and its his birthday so that means the coming of age ceremony, where no one under 15 can attend, is going to happen. He's to be the successor to the house of Vessalius which happens to be one of the four main Dukedoms but being an adolescent, who is also negl...more

I read Pandora Hearts with a little apprehension. I haven't liked any Alice in Wonderland remakes. However, I really enjoyed Pandora Hearts. It didn't try too hard to obviously be an Alice remake, and the plot and characters were really interesting.

At first, I didn't really care for Oz. His happy-go-lucky attitude was really annoying. But, I think I would have been even more annoyed if he got super depressed about everything that happened. Instead he was able to try to be cheerful about things...more

I think this is the best manga series that I have ever read. I love it so much, seriously! I'm currently on book 17, have followed the series since its start a couple of years ago, and I am still as hooked as I was back then.

The twists and turns of the plot, the depth of the characters, the actions, the fact that you can actually go back and read the first chapters and realize that EVERYTHING ties together (even minor details that you don't really pay attention to!!) with what has been revealed...more

This is great! Very gothic-lolita, with a dark and wonderfully twisted Alice in Wonderland theme. The artwork is enchanting, a great balance between beautiful flowing lines and grotesque and disturbing imagery. I liked the designs of the various Chains, especially the Mad Baby, and the broken-toy ambiance of the Abyss. I can also tell that I'm going to grow to adore Xerxes Break, probably this series equivalent of the Mad Hatter, he seems the type to have a friendly smile and polite word for eve...more

Despite being a colorful hodge-podge collection of bits and pieces from different sources like Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz among others, Pandora Hearts has a style and story that is very much its own. What starts out as an innocently humorous romp through an overgrown castle turns into a literal tumble through the rabbit-hole into the world of the Abyss and a brand new destiny for one Oz Vessalius. Oz is an arrogant little scamp who makes a sur...more

I picked this one up since a teen librarian I recently visited said her teens were itching to have this series as part of their collection. Volume 1 was a bit hit-or-miss for me. Clearly there was a lot of "set up" going on for the ongoing story, and at times I was confused and really turned around by what was happening. Had it been "smoother" - with the story elements, characters being introduced, etc. - I think I would have liked it more. I did, however, find it interesting enough to check out...more

First, just let me say that I'm not a fan of manga. I don't hate it, and I'm really glad that some people enjoy it. So, when my sister recommended this to me, I thought, Alright, I'll give it a try to make her happy. Fast-forward two days, and I'm reading the seventh book in the series, biting my nails as I dread the moment when I reach the end.

I just adore the characters, and some of the scenery is very pretty; there is good art in it, even if you don't like anime. The story is long and awesome...more

After reading Jun Mochizuki's Crimson Shell, I thought looking through Pandora Hearts wouldn't be a bad idea. If he could develop characters well in a one shot manga, there was no telling how he could develop characters in a longer series. So, I bought the first volume and read through it. Three times. In a row.

There's something oddly addicting about Pandora Hearts. At first, I thought it was just the art. Each frame is so well drawn and the way the characters are designed on page is fantastic....more

The art (particularly in the costume design) is gorgeous. It reminds me of Fullmetal Alchemist--a style I adore.

Interestingly, the story reminds me of FMA on a few levels. The premise of this volume is horrific surreal fantasy with quasi-religious elements. (It also has some Alice in Wonderland references, which is cool.) Some plotlines from FMA--like being "swallowed" by Gluttony, the "Truth," etc.--have a similar feel. It's mildly horrific in spots and definitely surreal; either you like that...more

Extremely confusing and hard to follow, but I have a feeling(which Lydia has confirmed) that as I read the volumes it will make more sense. I greatly enjoyed the characters, especially Alice, Break and Emily, and Raven. They were all so...crazy? lol and interesting and unique and just out there, which I really enjoy. I am eager to read more, and can't wait to meet the Vincent of whom I have heard so much about! Only two more volumes to go until I meet him!!!

Premise - 3/5

One of the very finest of manga series, the story draws you in and won't let go. Gorgeous art, unconventional characters , horror, fantasy, drama and romance all in one manga series. The nice thing is that , since it doesn't revolve around (tournament-style) fighting like Naruto and Bleach, it's clearly working toward an end , and lays the emphasis on solving the mystery. The element of speculating until the next revelation brings you closer to the answer may annoy some, but I love it.

OK. My first impression about this book was "very interesting"! Honestly, I love manga with mystery genre. I love to feel my heart beating so fast while I read a manga. I love to feel surprise when I know the truth about what's going on in the story. And you know, all of that things, I get in this manga.
Jun Mochizuki-sensei was a genius mangaka. Every time I finished read every chapter in this manga, I feel like 'oh, come on! Why did it happened? I want to read more!'. And lately I feel like 'Wh...more

My review of this book will consist of the actions that I took while reading it and hopefully that will be sufficient enough. I bought the book online a week ago. It arrived today. Due to it being the first sunny day in what felt like an unending winter I cut the grass, set up outside furniture, grabbed myself a Coke with ice and sat into this book.

I had finished it in about an hour or so later. Since then I've bought the next five volumes, and started to re-read this volume due to the fact I c...more

I really enjoyed the premises of Pandora Hearts - An Alice in Wonderland feel mixed with mystery and intrigue! The characters were interesting and I want to know more about Alice!

At some points however I felt a bit lost...

This whole book is weird. It seems to take pieces from Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz and a couple other things, but it doesn't use any of them in a readily recognizable way. The protagonist Oz is only fifteen and who knows how old the B. Rabbit Alice is, but things get a bit creepily sexual between them without removing any clothes. I think there is a bit of language and there is definitely some violence. People almost get eaten, someone gets stabbed with a sword and a couple other things. I...more
