A is for apple, B is for ball, C is for cat... but not in this wacky alphabet book! In author/artist Mike Lester's slightly warped world, A is for salad, B is for Viking, and C is for hot dog. What's that all about, you may ask? It's a fun way for kids to learn as they figure out what each alphabet letter actually stands for. A is for alligator, shown on the page eating a...more

THEEEE CUTEST HILARIOUSLY FUN alphabet children's book I have ever read in my whole 21 years 11 months 14 days!!! You'll never get board reading it and hey!! you'll even use your brains to figure out what does each letter really stand for?
Beautifully genius illustrations!

A is for Salad by Mike Lester is a funny, clever twist on alphabet books.

Lester presents the alphabet with the right animal but the wrong noun for each letter.

Most letters of the alphabet show the letter as a Capital in color followed by "is for" and an incorrect noun that an animal is interacting with. The incorrect noun is in bold. An appendix on the back endpapers explains what all the letters (except X and Y) really stand for.

Lester uses intricate woodcut-like illustrations showing comicall...more

Mike Lester's A is for Salad puts an interesting twist on the alphabet book. The critters depicted in the book (alligator, beaver, etc.) follow the normal progression of letters, but the action they are involved in what the letter is "for" (i.e. the alligator is eating salad, so "A" is for "salad"). The actual names of all the featured creatures are given on the endpapers at the back of the book.

I thought Lester's artwork (cartoon) was fun--he does a good job drawing action--but overall I though...more

I hadn't seen a good parody in a long time when I grabbed this book a few years ago. It reminded me of John Lennon's ABC, which I found in January 1995 in the old NCSA Mosaic days--one of the first things that made me believe in the internet!

A is for Parrot which we can plainly see.
B is for glasses which we can plainly see.
C is for plastic which we can plainly see
D is for Doris
E is for binoculars 9 1/4 get it in five
F is for Ethel who lives next door
G is for Orange which we love to eat when we...more

This is a HILARIOUS little book for kids who already know the tired old, tried-and-true routine of A is for alligator, B is for bird, C is for cat, D is for dog. (Actually, in this book B is for a VIKING who also happens to be a beaver, but that's beside the point.)

Each letter shows the actual correct animal demonstrating the wrong noun. My favorites have to be "I can't figure out what Q is for, can you?" when the picture shows several signs pointing "Look, it's a quail!" and "X and Y are not im...more

A Is for Salad by Mike Lester is one of the cutest books that I have read in a long time. I loved the pictures and I loved the story that went along with it. Even though this is a simple book and for children really of any age I was a little confused at first. It took me a minute or two to realize how the letters of the alphabet, the pictures, and the other words all worked together. However, once I figured it out I could not stop laughing. I would love to have a book like this in my classroom a...more

4.5 stars. Really funny. Kind of an advanced lesson for kids who have a good handle on the alphabet but you want to make sure they understand and aren't doing it by rote. The back endpapers are an 'answer key.' Do not look at either endpapers if you want to make a game.

I was able to get my husband and teen son to play with me. Before we turned each page, we guessed what critters would represent each upcoming (pair of) letters. Sometimes we were right, sometimes we were clueless. But we were gigg...more

This was my second time reading through this interesting book! At first, it took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on. The letter on the page does not represent the word that is being said. For example on the cover, A is not for salad, but A is for alligator. The alligator is the animal that is pictured on the cover. This continues throughout the entire alphabet. I think it is very clever and a good way to get a kids brain to get thinking. I would recommend this in classrooms for chi...more

My littles picked this up at a library sale and I okayed it without looking through it. We read it later at home and oh my, is this funny! It's not your typical alphabet book because each letter gives you a word that doesn't start with that letter - it's the animal pictured that starts with the letter. So A is for Salad and you have an Alligator eating a salad. We loved this clever play on words and had a fun time guessing the animals.

I think this would really only work with kids who had a pret...more

"A is for Salad" is a rather wacky and abstract take on your regular ABC or alphabet book. The text of the book is quite confusing in itself, but requires the reader to analyze each picture to find exactly what the letter stands for. Because of this, the book is unique and creates an "Ispy" or scavenger hunt for the young reader. However, I feel that some young readers may become confused with the hidden meaning and quite possibly get their letters mixed up. It is a good read aloud for the chil...more

A is for salad is a delightful alphabet book for children and parents looking for a laugh and some time to think about the alphabet. In this book, each letter is represented in the picture and the reader has to hunt for it. For example the alligator is eating the salad...

Why I started this book: Found it in the catalog while I was searching for Story Time books.

Why I finished it: I think that my favorite page was L is for hair dryer and M is for cowboy boots. I can't wait to share this with the...more

Mike Lester is delightful (have you seen THE BUTT BOOK?). Here is a twist on the classic "A is for _______" approach to alphabet books. Charming and funny illustrations invite younger readers to fix Lester's mistakes as the animals actually interact with (sometimes wear) what that letter actually stands for. . .

This one was recommended to me by a friend. I am so thankful for the community of readers with whom I interact on a daily basis for recommendations like one!

A is for Salad is a fun twist on the traditional alphabet book. The text on each page says something silly, like "A is for salad." Is "A" really for salad? No. So kids must look at the picture and figure out that A is really for Alligator. It's a great way to include the reader in the creativity of the story.
The illustrations look like hand-colored woodblock prints, and each page has a fun, adorable animal character. It's a great, fun alphabet book.

"A is for Salad" is an excellent book for teaching children the alphabet. I feel that it is a great book because it presents children with various references to a single letter within the alphabet. The title "A is for Salad" is titled as such because the letter A is referenced with a picture of an alligator eating salad. I feel that this humorous approach to the alphabet will stick in a child's memory for years to come.

This book is really cool and may confuse with the title, but as they read the book they will see that A is for Alligator who is eating a salad. The illustration will add to the fun of the book and children will enjoy each page as it reveal a alternate way to teach the alphabet. This book can be used in the classroom buy asking student to choose one letter and drawing pictures to mimick their own version of A is for salad.

Great to get kids thinking while having fun, each picture depicts an animal beginning with the featured letter engaged in some activity. For example, an alligator is eating a salad. There are a few animals, such as the iguana and narwhal, which have helpful clues as to the animals' identities hidden in the pictures. Kids may need help to identify the jellyfish and vulture, though.

Am I getting old? I totally don't think this is funny at all. I can see how this would work as a joke, because I pull similar ones all the time... like Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was pink as snow, and kids think that it's hilarious. Maybe they would like this one too? Maybe I should test it in my lab before I make any final decisions and file it under suck.

I cannot not decide what I thought about this book. It would be a good book for students who really know their alphabet. You could use it to try and trick students. Make them really look at the picture to figure out what the letter is for. Students who are still learning their letters may be really confused by this book.

I am a little addicted to alphabet books. This one is so humorous and thought provoking that it makes a child linger on each page to figure it all out. Even X and Y get their props along with Q!

Elementary Teachers, if you can find this book, get it. You will not regret placing this book on your shelf.

Any book that makes me snort AND laugh so hard I cry is worthy of 5 stars in my opinion.

We all know the traditional format for ABC books. But Mike Lester turns that format on its head and makes each letter represent something not even close to that letter... A is for salad... because the ALLIGATOR that the letter is supposed to represent is eating a salad.

If it were not for the hilarious illustrations, this book would surely fail, but Mike Lester succeeds 100% in the humor department. I'm alre...more

This is a great read aloud book. For each letter of the alphabet, there is an animal that starts with that letter, but the animal says that something else that's silly starts with the letter instead. So the alligator says A is for salad. Then, at story time, all the kids got to go, "No!" A fun change of pace for an alphabet book. Because of this, its not for very little ones just learning the alphabet or they might get confused; its for older kids who will get the joke for enough of the letters...more

This is a really fun book to read to kids because it isn't your typical A B C book. Such as - A is for Salad - an alligator is holding a salad. It goes through each letter of the alphabet and it is fun for the kids to guess what the actual word representing the letter is.

This book was very fun and was also briefly read to us in class. It's just a good way to get your kids going and let them sit back and enjoy a few good laughs. It is an ABC book that describes different letters of the alphabet to a certain object or thing all around us
Chanel
I thought this was the cutest book. I really like it because most books are usually a is for apple and b is for ball etc... I think you should use this book with older children with alphabetic principle, they will be able to say no e is for elephant not viking.
Allison Radding
This book will work well for students who are comfortable with the alphabet. This book challenges readers to figure out just what object begins with each letter. Great for testing letter recognition skills.

This book was very silly, a confused rendition of the alphabet. I feel like kids would get a real kick out of this book in the classroom. A is for Salad would be very useful when teaching young children the alphabet.

I'm back on the alphabet book trail! This one is a fun and hysterical way to reinforce phonics with preschoolers and pre-readers. Izzy couldn't stop laughing and asked to read it again and again!
Jackie
The alphabet is presented in a unique way, such as A is for salad (that is an alligator eating salad). Lots of humorous situations.

Used for "ABCs Gone Wild"-November, 2009.
