Kyoto is a breath-taking city of infinite discovery for the curious. I remember seeing Kyoto for the first time, and wondering why I had bothered to go there! It resembled most downtown cities that I had visited. What was so special about that? Well, what was so special was what was waiting to be uncovered. I hired a driver for a day as a tour guide, and I was dazzled.

Kyoto, naturally, is also the subject of this book. It is a picture tour of the World Heritage Sites found in and near the city.

This is the book you should read before you travel to Kyoto - or wish you had after you return. A cross between a guidebook and a coffee table book, City of Zen offers up two- to four-page profiles of the key temples, shrines, and villas to be seeing in Kyoto.

The stories of each are an illustration of Kyoto history and of Japanese history, and the photos are a feast for the eyes (and the pictures you'll wish you had taken.)

It will guide my choices for my next visit to Kyoto.

Simmons' photos are stunning and Clancy's text is a primer for Japanese history and culture. A good matching. Hopefully readers of this book will pick up Clancy's Exploring Kyoto to find out more about this wonderful ancient capital.
