I started reading this book thinking this guy does not suffer from humility at all but as I read more it struck me what he and his friends went through. And then when he eventually reached freedom he didn't sit back but strived to do all he could to achieve peace in both here in Australia and his homeland. It is very inspiring stuff. David Nyuol Vincent is a role model we should all look up to.

An amazing and confronting read. As one of the other reviewers said, should be mandatory reading for all. I found it a strange book to read as you are carried along on this litany, list almost of all the events in his life as he tells his story in a what seems on the surface to be a detached way, but at the same time I was grabbed and compelled by the sheer horror of a young boy growing-up in this way, surviving, and then using every ounce of his energy to bring about change. I found myself thin ...more

Opened my eyes to the real, horrific experiences of survivors of civil war. Inspirational and thought provoking.

Very honest account of David Nyuol Vincent's life and the adversity he faced as a result of the war in Sudan. Though much of the story is heartbreaking, the part that bought a tear to my eye was when he finally received the paperwork to come to Australia. the thought that we, as a nation, could rescue this teen boy from such conditions really raised the question of why we can't do the same for more people. His settlement in Australia was interesting and honest. Can't wait to meet him when he spe ...more

I enjoyed this book immensely. I had heard stories, but never first hand have been able to feel and imagine so closely and emotionally, what it was like is the Sudanese civil war, then entering a new country where the horrid of war follow. An inspiring and beautiful story of hope and love.

I saw David Vincent speak at a refugee week event in June and he was inspirational.
Thorougly enjoyed his book although it was fairly confronting at times. His positivity and "can do" attitude are very admirable. We need more refugees to tell their stories and inspire others like he does.

This book touched me deeply. What an amazing man, after all he has experienced in his life, to think so positively & be such a role model.

By giving this book five stars I'm saying "I strongly recommend that you read this book". I read it wanting to know more about the experience of one refugee and the book certainly does that. It was really moving for me to read about Vincent's story and background and gave me a sense of the incredible challenges and despair involved. Learning about Vincent's arrival in Australia and the challenges and differences here was also really illuminating. I used to live near the community housing where D ...more

A very moving book; incredible eye-opening story that moved me to tears with the suffering, courage, humanity and pursuit of peace. A book that everyone should read to gain a compassionate insight into the plight of refugees who seek asylum here and how lucky we are.

This is the most moving book, I have nothing but respect for people who make a normal life from a background such as this. Great reading.

A difficult tale to tell; a difficult story to get across in terms of pain, suffering and trauma; a sad story, but too challenging to portray in mere words.
