“Arthur Writes a Story” is somewhat apart of the “Pal the Puppy” trilogy as it deals with Arthur writing a story about how he got Pal from his pet business. From the mind of Marc Brown, Arthur has to write a good paper for his class, but he spends the majority of the book trying to figure out ways to make his story more interesting to hear about. “Arthur Writes a Story” is certainly a book for children who also have problems with writing a good paper for class, and the book would help them lea...more

This book is great for young readers who are learning about the process of writing. It helps children to remember to use detail, have creativity, and always remember to have a beginning, middle, and end. I like how it shows Arthur’s actual letter providing a display for children to refer to. It will remind them that they need a title, correct capitalization and punctuation, beginning, middle, end, and details to their story. It even has a good lesson to teach children to not always rely on othe...more
Very charming story about Arthur who writes a meaningful story about earning a dog, but ended up changing by adding some unnecessary details, and in the end he made completely bazaar poem about the elephants. When he presented his creation to the parents and later to the class, everyone was confused. Arthur admitted that he originally wrote a story about the dog, but he changed it to make it more exciting. The teacher and the class liked his first story better. I love this book!!! It teaches chi...more
How can you not LOVE Arthur?! This book was a great lead in to problem-solution writing for my 1st graders. The students were able to relate to Arthur and his struggles with writing a story that he felt was amazing. It was funny asking my students what their likes and dislikes were of writing. The responses were priceless! Once I was done with the read aloud, the students made a list of problems they have at school and problem they have at home. Then, they chose one to write about. They had to w...more
This story is about Arthur having to write a story as a class assignment, and he decides right away that he will write about his dog pal and how he got him. As he starts asking people for their opinions and finds out what they are writing about he continues to change is story by adding elements of theirs. This turns his story into a crazy mess.
The morals of the story revolve around having confidence in yourself, not doing things just because your friends are, and everyone has different...more

This book describes what happens when Ratburn has his class write a story. Arthur choses to write about how he got his puppy pal. After talking to his friends, he decides that he doesn't want his story to be boring so he keeps changing his story until he ends up with an outrageous story about elephants on the Planet Shmellafint!
I would use this book to talk about imagination and to introduce the idea of fact and fiction. I would also use this book in a writing activity.

This is like teh 3rd book i the sequence of Arthur getting a puppy. In this book Arthur's teacher tells the class that they have to write a story. Arthur choose to write about his ne puppy but other people ideas get in the way of his story. You have to read the book to find out what happens.
I appreciate that this book shows a student how to write a short story - great overview of writing. If you home school, it is nice when the teaching comes from another direction.
We used this in class to get the students to think about writing a narrative story. It was a great jumping off point and the kids all love Arthur.
Arthur learns (the hard way) what it takes to write a good story.
My son picked this up at his school library.
This book made me want to write stories.Great book!!
good early reader, using text to relate to the television show many of the stories hae been repeated in the show.
This book is a great read for early elementary students because it discusses the writing process. Arthur begins by choosing a topic for his paper, adding new ideas, and changing certain parts. In the end, Arthur must choose the best idea, the one that means the most to him, to write about. I would definitely recommend this book for early elementary students, especially during writing workshop.
A cute book about creativity and the frustration of wanting a story to be just right. Our girls really enjoyed this book and we've borrowed it a couple of times. We really enjoyed listening to the story narrated by the author, Marc Brown, while we followed along with the book.
Arthur writes a creative story but when he asks for feedback he ends up changing it several times. This is a good book to talk about getting ideas for writing.
Arthur thinks that his story is too boring, but when he changes it to something more exciting he realizes that the original true story was much better.
He writes a story about Pal. This lady had a dog who had puppies and that's how he got Pal. And that's the story. The End.
