Francis Partridge's diaries are the record of a woman who not only participated in the lives of the legendary Bloomsbury group, but was the circle’s oldest surviving member until her death in 2004. At the outset of the Second World War, Ralph and Frances Partridge were both convinced pacifists. These extracts from Frances' war diary present an intimate and vivid picture of ...more

Being a fan of the Bloomsbury circle - Virginia Woolf was always among my favorite authors, and Lytton Strachey writes English as beautifully as I have ever read it, and I always admired the way they tried to live according to their own values and so helped to create modernity and broke with the Victorian way of life - I guess it was only a matter of time until I read Frances Partridge's diaries. Read for EN4413: Reading the 1940s, 2011-2012.

I never thought I'd enjoy reading someone's diary so much as I did Frances Partridge's account of her personal experiences of WWII. This was such a compelling read and I found myself sympathising more and more with her as the war developed. The woman who emerges from the book is interesting; she believes in reason above all, and is convinced

This volume of diaries begins in January 1940 and ends with VE day in 1945. I've read the later volumes of diaries, with some gaps, so this was an interesting contrast and some later relationships and comments make more sense in the light of this volume. The Partridges were pacifists, and Frances's husband Ralph succeeded in registering as a Conscientious Objector (he was a decorated army officer in the previous war who had come to the conclusion that wars simply lead to more wars. He was also ...more
