This work by the renowned Peruvian author allows us to glimpse into the key years of his youth until his candidacy for President of Peru. These are stark, unadorned truths revealed through his hypnotic and masterly prose. The strained relationship between the author and his harsh, violent father; the discovery of his calling as a writer as a means to oppose parental author...more

What if a brilliant, intellectually honest, and financially successful writer of international esteem ran for president of a corrupt developing nation? What if he refused to kowtow to political advisers, avoiding negative personal attacks and not recanting his agnosticism, though he was running for president of Catholic Peru?

The Nobel Prize-winning Mario Vargas Llosa is fascinating in his own right, and my favorite novelist. This memoir runs as two alternating, parallel stories: his childhood an...more

"El pez en el agua" narrates Mario Vargas Llosa's adventure as a Presidential candidate in Peru. This is a good autobiographical novel about Peruvian politics and society. Even if the author did not win the election, he provides valuable insights to know how a well educated man in Peru perceives the political jungle in a developing country.
I usually like to compare "El pez en el agua" to "La fiesta del chivo". While the first novel reflects Vargas Llosa's honest opinion of politics, the second...more

Adems, y...more

Recommends it for: Peruvians, Latin America citizens, Politicians
In an autobiographical way, this book portrays two of the most important moments in the life of Mario Vargas Llosa (Nobel Prize of Literature in 2010). One of them is his early years in college and his gradual decision to become a writer, and the other one is the time he spent as a candidate for the presidency of his country, Peru. In his own tradition, his writing style is very fluid and it is always a pleasure to read about his thoughts and anecdotes during those times. Even though the topic o...more

Written in a dual format, this memoir switches back and forth between Mario Vargas Llosa's formative years, since he was a child and until he won a scholarship that allowed him to move to Paris (his dream), with memories and stories about his family and friends, and a detailed account of his attempt at becoming president of Peru in 1990 (when he was 54), only to lose to Alberto Fujimori, complete with analyses of the political and intellectual scene of the time and of what the author thought wer...more

This is a very interesting book....IF....you have an interest in past Peruvian presidential elections, which I suspect very few Americans do. Vargas Llosa is a famous Peruvian writer who decided to run (without success) for President of Peru. I read this book while backpacking in Peru and for that it was great. In any other context, I would give this book 3 stars.

At a mature age, Mr. Vargas bring us a very interesting story (and real too). A short summary of his life before migrating to Europe and his attempt to become Peruvian's President.

It describes the political history of Peru since the 1950s up the end of the century with his already known style. A 'must read' if you are interested in Latin America.

If you are from Peru or interested in its history a must read. For the average reader, prefer his novels.
But loved the chapters about his childhood and youth, but the presidential campaigning was too much detail...so I skipped a few pages at the end!

I've read 'The Feast of the Goat' and 'The Way to Paradise' and enjoyed them both. This is not his latest (which I think is titled 'The Bad Girl'), but is a memoir about when he ran for president in Peru.

This author grabs his reader and holds her close to his heart, so we can feel his passions and understand his perspective on the vivid world he inhabits, both past and present, at once.

Mario Vargas Llosa, born in Peru in 1936, is the author of some of the most significant writing to come out of South America in the past fifty years. His novels include The Green House, about a brothel in a Peruvian town that brings together the innocent and the corrupt; The Feast of the Goat, a vivid re-creation of the Dominican Republic during the final days of General Rafael Trujillo’s insidiou...more
