This work by the renowned Peruvian author allows us to glimpse into the key years of his youth until his candidacy for President of Peru. These are stark, unadorned truths revealed through his hypnotic and masterly prose. The strained relationship between the author and his harsh, violent father; the discovery of his calling as a writer as a means to oppose parental author ...more

What if a brilliant, intellectually honest, and financially successful writer of international esteem ran for president of a corrupt developing nation? What if he refused to kowtow to political advisers, avoiding negative personal attacks and not recanting his agnosticism, though he was running for president of Catholic Peru?

The Nobel Prize-winning Mario Vargas Llosa is fascinating in his own right, and my favorite novelist. This memoir runs as two alternating, parallel stories: his childhood an

This was an interesting read, although it is really two books in one: 1.) memoir of MVL's childhood and youth, and 2.) account of his campaign for president. Book #1 is super fun and fascinating. Book #2..... well, it has not aged well. There are a LOT of names (much like any good politician's memoir MVL spends a LOT (and I mean A LOT) of time giving shout-outs to those who helped him). He also spends a fair amount of time bitching out those he feels betrayed him, which I'm sure was therapeutic ...more

There's a lot to love about this book. As a student of Latin American poltics, it has some great inside information and gossip on the election campaign of the 1990s. The parts from MVL's early life, especially his membership of socialist gangs and crime reporting are also entertaining. Its amazing how prolific and gregarious he was from such an early age.

However, for me the book loses a lost a lot of momentum in the second half. The tails of university life and his first marriage are less inters

Intriguing life story of a writer as it can be. A bold testimony of unfortunate and insidious, perennial populist politics that portrays so much of turbulent Latin America history and reality.

Dissecting Peruvian politics, economy, society, democracy and human nature he crosses no border of his country to offer insights of its failures, corrupt nature and continuous struggles.

Juxtaposing intimate and public, Llosa reveals inspiration and sources of many of his stories and characters.

"El pez en el agua" narrates Mario Vargas Llosa's adventure as a Presidential candidate in Peru. This is a good autobiographical novel about Peruvian politics and society. Even if the author did not win the election, he provides valuable insights to know how a well educated man in Peru perceives the political jungle in a developing country.
I usually like to compare "El pez en el agua" to "La fiesta del chivo". While the first novel reflects Vargas Llosa's honest opinion of politics, the second

The book tells two very different stories in alternate chapters, like La Tia Julia, but unlike that novel the threads never actually converge. Both are interesting: Vargas Llosa's memoir of his first 22 years, until he sets sail for Europe in 1958 to become a writer; and his failed campaign for the presidency of Peru in 1987-90 (following which he also return to Europe and writing.) The latter is more detailed than a non-Peruvian might want, and it seems possible that the publishers requested t ...more

Recommends it for: Peruvians, Latin America citizens, Politicians
In an autobiographical way, this book portrays two of the most important moments in the life of Mario Vargas Llosa (Nobel Prize of Literature in 2010). One of them is his early years in college and his gradual decision to become a writer, and the other one is the time he spent as a candidate for the presidency of his country, Peru. In his own tradition, his writing style is very fluid and it is always a pleasure to read about his thoughts and anecdotes during those times. Even though the topic o ...more

This book started off as a really interesting trip into the childhood of one of the worlds most highly-regarded living authors. Chapters go back and forth between childhood/young adult years and the presidential campaign Vargas Llosa ran in the early 1990s. While reading the behind the scenes political pieces I repeatedly had to give myself pep talks to avoid getting sucked into the authors narrative, but its hard to maintain an objective distance while Vargas Llosa personally takes you under hi ...more

Written in a dual format, this memoir switches back and forth between Mario Vargas Llosa's formative years, since he was a child and until he won a scholarship that allowed him to move to Paris (his dream), with memories and stories about his family and friends, and a detailed account of his attempt at becoming president of Peru in 1990 (when he was 54), only to lose to Alberto Fujimori, complete with analyses of the political and intellectual scene of the time and of what the author thought wer ...more

The book gives us an account of two moments in the life of Mario Vargas Llosa: from his early childhood to the time he leaves his house to go to a military school, and his life as a politician when he ran for the Peruvian Presidency, in 1990. It is one of his books that left me with a good insight of the Peruvian reality, albeit one can feel his eagerness to justify his own mistakes as a candidate, and to blame others. Maybe he is right or maybe he isn't. But unlike other of his books, the persp ...more
