Ah, the humble scarecrow...

Iconic denizen of the farmer's field. A straw man, possessor of tattered clothing, infinite patience, and a deep knowledge of the psychology and behavioral habits of our feathered friends.

Imagine if suddenly, that scarecrow were to come to life. That's exactly what happens in this story. This is one fellow who already has a brain in his knobby turnip head, and he soon acquires a servant in the form of a young boy named Jack.

Together they set out to have adventures, a

This is a delightful little story, for children and adults alike. A scarecrow is struck by lightning, and comes to life; he recruits a young lad named Jack as his personal servant, and having nothing better to do the two embark on a grand adventure, complete with an army episode, entrangement on a solitary isle, and even a love affair. All complete with fun illustrations, bringing the story to life and pointing out its dramatic and hilarious moments just on time. Obviously inspired by Cervantes, ...more

I felt a little disappointed at the beginning of this story. After that, I realized that I just needed to work my way through it and see where it was going to take me. After that, I found myself enjoying the occasional play on words and tongue in cheek phrases that the author introduced. I even found myself looking up a word that I don't think I have ever come across before. The word was scarper. I thought it was a typo but it was not. By the end of the story, all of the seemingly scattered stor ...more

This really is a wonderful fairy tale. It has all the good qualities of a classic fairy tale -- imaginative, journeys, adventures, colorful characters, and bad-guys who are obviously bad.

The young boy, Jack, has sense enough to know that everything is quite odd -- what with his master being a turnip-headed scarecrow -- but has the youthful imagination to go along with it.

If there is a down-side to this book, it's that it did get to be a little long. Perhaps one too many adventures for the scarec

This book was weird. It wasn't bad or anything. I just couldn't find any moral in the story.

I found this book in a thrift shop. (4 books for 1 pound! Who would pass that out?) anyway, it was just, well--GAH! It's hard to understand!

It was a quick read, but considering I was also reading Hannibal Rising at the same time. It took me longer then it a average 3 grader to finish....

This isn't a book that changed a view in my life. It's about a scarecrow that came to life by lighting. (This makes me

i decided to read this book as i had ran out of good books and it was just sitting their on my one of my book selves. What also made me want to read it was the fact it was my Philip Pullman and i had enjoyed reading his other books.

The category that this book is in is a book that teaches you about a different time in history. It fits under this one as it is set back in the days of scarecrows, servants, castles and brigands. I love this book as it is a humored and witty read that I really enjoye

Boneka Jerami : bodoh, tapi sok tahu

All I had previously read from Pullman was the His Dark Materials books. I picked this up purely on the strength of Pullman's name.

I asked myself lots of questions while reading this book. Questions like: Is this book supposed to be an allegory? Is it supposed to be coherent? Was that an attempt at humor? Where is this story going? Will it ever end? Why am I still reading this?

Take a pass on this one. There are so many other better books out there with similar feel and similar target audience.

Ini si boneka jerami lucu banget sih, penuh pikiran positif tapi konyol. Kasihan Jack, si pelayan, tapi setidaknya dia mempunyai tuan yang sangat percaya dan menyayanginya.

Ngomong-ngomong kalau saya jadi Jack, saya akan pingsan melihat boneka jerami yang tiba-tiba hidup. Bonekanya tampangnya seram lagi. Si boneka jerami ternyata luar biasa baik hati. Meskipun dengan seenaknya di

This strange little book is a cross between The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the Wizard of Oz. A dying farmer makes a scarecrow and tucks a letter inside "to show where he belonged." The Scarecrow is struck by lightening and comes to life. He meets a small boy who has lost his family and home to marauding soldiers, and the boy, Jack, becomes the Scarecrow's servant. The two wander about the countryside having adventures. The Scarecrow is all wide-eyed innocence, while Jack is loyal and sma ...more

Although I was originally familiar with Pullman’s work primarily through the His Dark Materials trilogy, it has been pleasant to discover his other works, which are at least as original and enjoyable as the trilogy. In The Scarecrow and His Servant, Jack and his master, an animated scarecrow, wander aimlessly across a country that may or may not be Italy (the names sound Italian, in any case). At least, the wandering seems episodic and aimless initially; however, on closer examination, a clear a ...more

I recommend it for ages 9-13.
This is a fantasy story in which a scarecrow comes to life when he's struck by lightning and makes friends with a boy named Jack. On their way to Spring Valley, the two companions have some wild adventures due to the scarecrow's wild, fanciful ideas. Luckily, he has Jack and a few other friends to get him out of the "pickles" that he gets himself into.

This was an odd book that I didn't really enjoy. Nevertheless, the plot played a significant rol

I think that "The Scarecrow and his Servant" is a very good book even though it has no real meaning.

Jack is the servant's name and he helps the scarecrow out from a puddle of mud and the scarecrow has one leg missing so the scarecrow asked Jack to go and find another leg for him. Jack finds a leg for the scarecrow and brings it to him so Jack becomes his servant and they start going on adventures together.

Phillip Pullman is becoming one of my favorite authors. He's most famous for The "His Dark Materials" series, but he's also written other books that are smart and full of a sly wit and hilarious sense of the absurd. This one is a light, picaresque fable about a scarecrow who is struck by lightening and comes to life, and his sidekick, a starving young boy orphaned by the wars. The scarecrow is the innocent here, a self-declared sworn enemy of all birds, who rescues fallen chicks and tenderly car ...more

I love Phillip Pullman and was delighted to find this book in Ireland last year, while on holiday .... I read this in the car to the kids as we drove around the countryside, and I have never had such rapt attention and giggling from the backseat. The kids loved it, I loved it and it was hilarious to read out loud! The scarecrow is just a regular old garden type til it is struck by lightening and rises, like a straw filled Frankenstein, to become a "man".... albeit a very proper and gentlemanly o ...more

Narrated by Graeme Malcolm. Scarecrow comes to life when he is hit by a lightning bolt. He ventures from the muddy field where he's stood to find Spring Valley, the place that is written on Scarecrow's heart, and meets young orphaned Jack who agrees to become his servant. Where Scarecrow is naive and enthusiastic, Jack serves as the voice of reason. Their adventures include battling soldiers, appearing in a play and joining an army. However, hot on their trail is the Buffaloni family. The profit ...more

I don't know why I picked up this book to listen to on my trip but I did. This is a take on Don Quixote with the Scarecrow being the one fight for right and his sidekick a young boy who helps him get what he needs to succeed. It's a sweet story--with a happier ending than Don Quixote.

Another iconic story from the Pullman stable. Pullman seems to take all the familiar elements and throw them together in a different mix. A scarecrow comes to life, gains a terribly useful servant Jack and they adventure through the rest of the book. Also following them is a lawyer. Now what could a lawyer want with a scarecrow? Therein lies a Pullman tale.

Also entwined in the fun story is an anti-pollution, anti big corporations and an anti capitalist message. Read because it's a story from pe

While I didn't enjoy this quite as much as his other books like Two Craft Criminals!, I was still entertained. Phillip Pullman is an excellent writer to begin with, and shows great skill and versatility in writing both excellent children's books and excellent adult fantasy as well.
