The modern version of this "original cocktail," widely known as the Old Fashioned, is a standard in any bartender's repertoire and holds the distinction of being the only mixed drink ever to rival ...more

It was interesting to read about the history of the Old Fashioned cocktail, but it definitely wasn't long enough to be a book. Should be published as an article.

This was a bit too short to have been a book and could have included a lot more context and background. I was excited to see over 10 footnotes on the first page, but was disappointed that there just wasn't more in terms of the direct history. Most of the history included was actually on tangential topics like the Whiskey rebellion and the origin of the Waldorf-Astoria which while interesting and somewhat relevant weren't as germane as I would have wished. More biography on James Pepper could ...more

This is more of a 2.5 but I rounded up because it is better than some things I have ranked as 2.

Anyway, I kinda expected this book to be something different from what it was. I was expecting your basic pop-history type book, casually/conversational writing style type thing. This is more of a scholarly monograph, it is published by University of Kentucky press and is only 50 or so pages, probably at least 10 of which are references/bibliography. So it was interesting to read, but just not really

This is a very short book (the print version has 128 pages) -- but then, it is the proper length for the subject. Mr. Schmid postulates that the Old Fashioned was the first cocktail, and uses American social and economic history to make his point. He then moves on to the venues that popularized the drink. Finally, he includes a substantial collection of recipes, both traditional and otherwise, with discussion of the important differences between them.

Bottoms Up!

This is a quick read, but an interesting one. A little historical perspective and a great number of recipes, and you're on your way to finding your perfect cocktail!

A very short "book" about all things old fashioned whisky cocktail. Without the recipes, this would have made a short paper. Nothing surprising, nothing all that interesting.
