The Grimm brother's famous anthology of fairy tales is here accompanied by Anderson's beautiful illustrations. Delicate black and white text drawings and full page colour plates are full of emotion and charm. About the Illustrator: Anne Anderson (1874-c.1940) was a Scottish illustrator chiefly noted for her Art Nouveau children's book illustrations that display fluidity ty ...more

Overall quite enjoyable! Some tales I loved, some were just kind of meh, but it was fun!

description

I'm thrilled that this book contains the nasty version of Cinderella, where the stepsisters not only cut off parts of their feet in an attempt to wear the slipper, but also get their eyes pecked out by birds during the royal wedding.

That'll learn 'em.

These "children's classics" are fairly dripping with blood - particularly the evil blood of those who seek to keep true love from running its natural, ho-hum course.

These were dark and scary times to be a stepmother.
Even though Snow White is stupi

I was originally was going to give this a 3 because it is uneven strange, and sometimes surprisingly amoral, but then i realized how much I acutally had to say about it, and just how much I enjoyed reading these goofy stories. So bear with me while i recount some of the best and worst stories and some of the strange themes of grimm's fairy tales. (I have to admit, I write these reviews almost entirely for myself)

Some themes/things you should know:
-If you are an evil stepmother or witch, and you

I'm glad to have read this, simply because fairy tale plots and themes are used so often in modern literature that it felt good to become acquainted with old versions of the tales and get closer to the original folklore. I also enjoyed picking up on some of the values of the time that come across in the stories.

That said, most of them are terribly boring. The method of storytelling is something I just could not get comfortable with - rapid, perfunctory, repetitive, bizarrely irrational. It was

I listened to these and this is what I've learnt:

Things you really need to know if you ever end up in fairy tale land.

Don’t rely on the love of your father if he is hungry and has a nagging second wife.

Cutting off bits of your toes or your heals is not the most effective way to win the prince. But if you do find this necessary, remember to cauterise the wound.

Always chew your food, Mr Wolf.

If you are female then men may well complain that you talk too much – but remaining silent for seven years

I loved reading these fairy stories, my language teacher was talking about them ages ago and was telling our class that they are a 'must read'. I didn't realise originally how creepy they are. In one of the stories there was even an exorcism. It amazes me how the Grimm brothers have managed to create such original tales like Cinderella and Rapunzel. I actually loved the language that was used too especially the rhyming! I felt I needed to read these short stories as I love literature so much and ...more

The Golden Bird-
why about the golden cages? in this tale, whatever looks good isn't.
This story is like the nightmare of the German; no one can properly follow simple instructions. And the moral of the story: if somebody asks fervently to be killed and mutilated do follow through immediately, he might be a prince. :P

I couldn't find the edition I had so I went with one that was closest in date.

Why only 4 stars for the tails we all remember "fondly" from childhood? Think about it. These are "Grimm's" fairy tales and they certainly are "grim". Still there are tales we remember and love so...4. Their at least not as "grim" as Andersen's fairy tales!

As a child, I was never much exposed to fairy tales, only a tiny selection of them. I read (almost) all of them many years later as a part of my cultural anthropology studies, and we compared them to earlier versions (Charles Perrault and others), which were much more explicit and occasionally had sexual content that doesn't appear in the Grimm versions at all. Originally, fairy tales weren't necessarily aimed at children; often the contrary was the case.

There's still a lot of pretty gruesome v

Taking into account all the ratings for each individual tale, the final rating would be of 3.5 but I'm upgrading it to 4 because this edition is astonishingly beautiful. The artwork inside makes the reading experience even better. From the 27 tales this edition has, my absolute favourites are: Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs, Snow White, The Golden Goose, The Goose Girl and Puss 'n Boots.

Cinderella was quite a surprise to be honest. I knew some of the gore details be

"Seven at one blow--that is my way!"

Never has a little book of stories delighted me so. It was easy, breezy and beautiful, like Covergirl. And amusing, and creepy, like all good fairy tales should be. The quote above is from "The Gallant Tailor," a sure favorite, though there are so many I would call favorite. "Six Soldiers of Fortune" holds a certain rebellious essence to it, and could mean a lot to a soldier of today. In the story, soldiers are neglected once one of the king's wars is declared

Ever wonder why we stop reading Fairy Tales!!

All great cultures have passed on rich heritage for coming generations in the form of art, music, dance, dressing, behaviour, traditions, language, greetings, symbols, scripts, and of course literature. Literature could be in the form of religious scripts, historical recordings, pictorial representations, hymns, songs and folk tales. Aesop Fables of the Greek, Panchtantra Tales of India, Jataka Tales of the Buddhist and the Brothers Grimm’s Fairy Tale

Note: I am reading a kindle version of the 1922 publication of this collection titled Grimm's Fairy Stories. It is equal to 144 pages long and has 28 of the Grim Brother's tales. The Kindle version does not have the illustrations so obviously I can not comment on them.

This is the first time I've actually read Grimm's fairy tales. I know a lot of them, as does everyone else, but only through the watered down Disney version, various children TV shows (Does anyone remember Shirley Temple Theater?)

Over the years, I've read a considerable amount of fairytales so I was familiar with most of the stories in this collection (in one form or another). However I was surprised at how dark some of the themes were, especially if they were intended for children. Good always seems to prevail but not in the way we would think. With faithful servants being beheaded and frogs being smashed on walls before their worth emerges, no wonder Disney et al have glossed the stories up to suit modern day sensitivi ...more

Keep in mind that I don't know much about the history behind Grimm's Fairy Tales. I was so excited to read this book and it did not disappoint! I love seeing all the original stories and see how they have changed over the years to the one we know today. I love how most of the stories had a deeper meaning to scare kids into behaving. Others stories were completely off the wall having characters that were inanimate objects. I think the egg was my favorite character. I did not realize how much of o ...more

Fairy tale as bloody as it comes

Forgive me for i am going to be all preachy and philosophical in my review

Once upon a time there were two brothers going by the name “Grimm Brothers”. Over the period of time they chronicled stories emerging from all sorts of land and nature. These stories were tainted with horrors of human evilness ranging from the ability to cut and bleed their own family to throwing away humanity for a piece of gold. These stories were ironically grim as the name of the

Warning -
If you read these stories too close together they get a little repetitive
If you read them to very young children they will probably have nightmares

Things I have learned from this collection of fairy tales-
All Princesses are beautiful
All step-Mothers are wicked
All step-sisters are ugly
Luckily Kings are unable to tell the difference between beautiful princesses and their ugly step-sisters
Animals can talk
Magical transformations are normal
Princesses are saved by their natural goodness

Dear my future kids,

Mum is likely to read you this kind of gore fairy tales because to be completely honest with you, fairy tales aren't as sweet as what disney showed you. I know, sweethearts, beautiful lies, truth hurts.
