Vengeance Road is a suspenseful ‘hold-your-breath’ ride, with twists and turns at breakneck speed!

Jack Gannon, a reporter for The Buffalo Sentinel, investigates the brutal murder of one prostitute and the disappearance of another, a woman who had picked herself off the street and cleaned up her life. The investigation points to one suspect—hero cop Karl Styebeck, a man with a secret past brimming with violence. Then there’s the mysterious blue rig that haunts the highways. How is it connected to
The first book in the Jack Gannon series from author Rick Mofina, "Vengeance Road" is a dark, and twisted thriller. Jack Gannon is the ace crime reporter for the Buffalo Sentinel. Once nominated for a Pulitzer, Gannon is the best at what he does. The Buffalo Police Department has been called out to a dead body found at Ellicot Creek. Something very out of the norm for this area. The body of Bernice Tina Hogan has been partially buried in a very grisly manner. Police are keeping the scene off lim ...more

Wow. Spare, concise writing, and compelling story-telling. This is reading heaven, isn't it? At least that's how the book starts. Then, somewhere around chapter 40, things turn horribly, horribly bad. As in scary bad. What do I mean? Let me explain.

It begins with Rick Mofina and his Goodreads blurb:

Rick Mofina is a former journalist and an award-winning author of several acclaimed thrillers. His reporting has put him face-to-face with murderers on death row in Montana and Texas. He has covered a

NOTE: I received this book as part of the Amazon Vine Program

Jack Gannon works as a reporter at the Buffalo Sentinel. He catches wind of the murder of a troubled former nursing student and decides to investigate. But as he does, he gets into more and more murky waters as one of the top suspects ends up being an upstanding police officer.

I Liked:
Rick Mofina doesn't spend an excess of time on details. His writing is pretty cut and dry, minimal details needed
I really enjoyed Vengeance Road. Having never read R. Mofina before I was leary of the "international best-seller" tag on the cover. But Mofina writes brillantly. He is a former crime reporter and translates his expertise into fiction wonderfully. I couldn't put this book down. Although this is a murder, supense, fiction, the crime wasn't terribly graphic and descriptive. I appreciated that, because some authors go a little too far with what happened.

The story follows Jack Gannon, a reporter fo

A woman's body lies twisted in a shallow grave. Carved into her bloody skin, one word. GUILTY. A trail of bodies litters America's loneliest highways, their branded corpses marking a path of brutal retribution. This killer is judge, jury - executioner.

For a detective hiding a dark secret and an ordinary man willing to put his life on the line, the time to stop the killing spree is running out. Judgement day has come. Who is ready to die?

Vengeance Road is a thick book :)387 pages worth, and I only mention that because I'm not always in the mood for that kind of time investment. But Vengeance Road really is a page-turner. It hooks you and moves swiftly, without a lot of maundering about. Not a word, not a phrase is wasted. The characters seem real to you, like your neighbors and whether you like or dislike them, you can't help wanting to know what is going to happen with them.

The main character is Jack Gannon, a Buffalo NY report

Jack Gannon is a reporter who had once had bright future. He put his dreams on hold when his parents were killed in a car accident. He missed his opportunity and is still a reporter for a newspaper in Buffalo. He is

I've read books 1-3 in the Jack Gannon Series over the past week and found them all to be the kind that grab my attention and keep me reading just about non-stop. I actually read them out of order and just read Vengeance Road, the first Jack Gannon book today. There is a story arc that runs through these three books but I didn't feel I missed much by reading them out of order.Jack Gannon is an investigative reporter who doesn't quit once he has a lead on a story even if it gets him in t

This book makes me think of Hitchcock in the book world. Masterfully crafted to keep you on the edge of your seat.
This is the second book of Rick Mofina's books that I have read and it was just as much a thrill ride as the first. From the moment you pick it up it captures you and does not let up until the very end.
I love the fact that although this story is about a brutally murdered prostitute and the disappearance of another woman it is told with very minor descriptions of the brutality, more
Wow! I really got sucked into this story! I'm a definite new fan of Rick Mofina. This is the second book of his that I have read. Cold Fear was the first. He really knows how news organizations work along with police departments, and how to build a multifaceted story with many realistic characters--most likely drawn from his own life experiences. I like the way he can describe a gruesome scene leaving most the gory details to our own imaginations. He does not overdo the blood and gore, altho it ...more

Jack Gannon is a first rate reporter at The Buffalo Sentinel. When he hears a call on the newspaper’s scanner for the Medical Examiner and no one at the paper was paying attention he decided to investigate himself even though he wasn’t on the cop-desk duty. The body of Bernice Hogan, a former nursing student with a tragic past, is found in a shallow grave.

This is the first book by Rick Mofina I've read, and I'll certainly be seeking out more of them. A former crime reporter himself, Mofina has the experience to create a convincing suspense tale featuring Buffalo Sentinel reporter Jack Gannon, who has ambitions of landing a reporting job in New York City.

He is determined to discover the truth behind the murder of a prostitute and former nursing student, Bernice Hogan, who was taking steps toward cleaning up her life, and the disappearance of her f
Jolene Peller used to be into drugs and prostitution. She is done with all that and is changing her life around. A big reason for the change has to do with her son. He is the most important thing to her. Jolene wants her friend Bernice Hogan to quit her old life as well. Bernice doesn’t want to change. Jolene has a bad feeling that something has happened to Bernice. Jolene is walking down towards the forest creek, when she hears a woman scream and it sounds like Bernice. Before Jolene can take a ...more

Okay, I think this is the first book that falls solely into the crime genre that I have read and I’m glad Mofina’s is the first I picked up because I was not disappointed. I have read humorous crime, romantic suspense and plenty of stories with crime elements, but this book is all about the crime without the romance and humour which would normally draw me in.

Vengeance Road is a gripping crime thriller that had me turning the pages and saying oh, just one more chapter before I put it down. The ch
Jack Gannon works for the Sentinel, a newspaper based in New York. Much like journalist Mikael Blomkvist in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Jack Gannon went all in on a court case that he didn't have all the right evidence for. Jack spends the rest of the story redeeming himself by getting the proof to the information he knows is fact. The top news media companies are racing against Jack to break the story of murdered girls. It felt like the book didn't have to go on as long as it did. it was nearl ...more
Anyone who likes a book with pace, action and suspense will enjoy Vengeance Road; the first in a new series. It’s a well-written, straightforward murder mystery with an affable protagonist. Jack Gannon is a reporter for the Buffalo Sentinel, looking for a good story and his big break, which is how he ends up involved trying to solve the gruesome murder of one woman and the disappearance of another. The stakes are raised when his investigation reveals a highly respected decorated cop may be the p ...more

Vengeance road is a suspenseful story. With plenty of twists and turns. Although this is a murder, suspense, fiction , story the crime wasn,t terribly graphic and descripitive. The story follows Jack Gannon a reporter for the Buffalo Sentinel. He lost his siter too? He is following the story of a murdered prostitute in a local park somehow a local police hero is implicated in the crime . As Gannon persues the police hero stories start to change and history comes to the forefront. Can Karl Styebec ...more
Vengeance Road was a fairly good mystery novel. The main character, an underappreciated but brilliant newspaper reporter, was likeable but not really distinctive. The descriptions of the killings themselves was a bit annoying, with the aspects of how the victims were murdered more inferred than described. Although I don’t enjoy reading gruesome details, neither do I like being kept in the dark. Our hero also has an older sister that is mentioned, and I hope this plot line is resolved in future b ...more
I loved this book, it was so hard to put down. A great thriller full of suspense, I can't wait to read more from Rick Mofina.

Great book, roller-coaster of a read, action start to finish. A novel in the Jack Gannon series, although, this is the first one I have read. Now, I have to find his other novels. Jack Gannon is a reporter, who reports on a brutal murder and get's shafted by his boss when he reports on the chief suspect in the case. He decided to investigate the story on a freelance basic and soon discovers, this case is a tangled web of a seriously scarred family. Great story from a very talented writer.

Rick Mofina's brand new book and brand new character, Jack Gannon, are guaranteed to keep you up all night. I chouldn't put this book down. Gannon is a reporter that just won't quit when he is in pursuit of a story, and the killer in this story is one bad dude. The story has a killer of an ending too! Now I have to order and catch up on his earlier books!
This is the best book I have read in a long time. I started it last night and could not put it down. I finished it just after supper tonight. The story is excellent. When Michael Connelly endorses it on the front and Allison Brennan on the back cover. What more can I say. If you like suspense your going to love this book.
What a ride! This book keeps you guessing and on the edge of your chair. It may be a bit too bloody for some people, but it was a great read. I felt sorry for one of the bad guys, however. He really tried to change his life - to no avail. If you want a suspense book that keeps you turning the pages, this is the one to read.
This is my first read of a Rick Mofina book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Jack Gannon and his escapades. We need more reporters who can see the political ownership and alliances between real news and perceived news.

This was a very suspenseful and enjoyable book. I will definitely seek out another book by this author.

A great and thrilling spell binder, although some of the torture methods used seemed a bit graphic and severe, a romping read, certainly to me a "not being able to put it down" kind of book, I just noticed Rick was born in Belleville Ontario, of all places so a fellow Canadian, pretty awesome.
Keep those books coming Rick!
Jack Gannon is a reporter, in the old sense of the word. He finds a story, investigates, writes, and never gives up his integrity, no matter what the boss wants. The book was worth it just for him. The crime itself, or rather the story of the family of the murderer, is twisted and strange.
