About 1/5th of the way into this book, I realized that this book was what an upper middle-class, suburban girl would write if she was writing about "normal", lower middle class kids.
Anderson starts referring to the number of kids that are crack-whores, in jail, etc. but none of the characters in the book get into any kind of "serious" trouble. This is simply not the truth for large groups of lower middle class kids. Many lower middle class kids have friends who ...more

My first modern YA book that I've read for my class this semester. First of all, I forgot how awesomely easy it is to read at a lower reading level, these books are going to go fast!

its a good book, It had me sucked in on some parts, and bored on others, but in all it had a lot of action and things to look foward to reading. The characters are interesting and the drama is fantastic. i enjoyed reading this book, its given me so many laughs.

What is something that you think that you will never do in your entire life time? Well Ashley Hannigan was convinced that she would never go to her Senior Prom, or let alone get caught up in anything to do with it. On the other hand, her best friend, Nat, was the head of the Prom committee thought that Prom was all set and stone, until the big disaster. Now both Ashley and Nat find themselves doing what they never expected themselves to be doing.

ok, can we all agree on one crucial point before i commence: proms suck. they do. they're a lot of build up and hype and flash and glitter, but there's always puke or some girl crying her eyes out in the bathroom or some kid who gets wasted or brings drugs or breaks up with his girlfriend for a freshman. it's the acme of high school drama. with high heels. so, should we really expect that much from a book of the same name?
no.

Ashley Hannigan, a normal high school senior living just outside of Philadelphia, is not excited about the prom. Don't tell that to her mom, her aunts, or her next-door neighbor and best friend Nat, though -- they could not be more excited if they tried. Nat's on the prom committee, and everything is going well. That is, until Miss Crane, the prom committee chairperson, is busted for taking all the prom money. Just like that, it's all gone. No hotel, no food, no DJ, no security -- no prom. But N...more
Ashley Hannigan's plans for the future don't include the senior prom; they include things like squeaking through to graduate, moving out of her parents' crowded house and into a Philadelphia apartment with her high school dropout boyfriend. Those plans change when Miss Crane, the math teacher, embezzles all the prom money. Before she can say, "Too weird," Ashley finds herself choreographing a school gala that changes everything. Tender; funny; perceptive.

When a greedy faculty advisor ruins all hopes for a senior prom of epic proportions, Ashley could give a damn. In fact, she could give 2¢ about the final weeks of senior year. Who cares about making up all the missed detentions in order to attend the senior activities? Not Ashley. If only she wasn’t best friends with the Prom Committee chair who strongarms Ashley to helping to save prom. If only her mother and aunts hadn’t found out about it and insisted on taking Ashley on a shopping spree for ...more
I enjoyed this book yet was irritated by it at the same time. I think the author does a great job at transporting you to the world of a high school seniors mind at the time when graduation is getting close and plans for the future are being made. I would not recommend this story to anyone.

Ashely Hannigan doesn't want anything to do with prom. She doesn't even want to go to prom. Until she raised her hand in the meeting suggesting advice to what they should do. That's when her friend Natalia wanted her to join the club. Somehow Ashley has been helping out on organizing for the prom since the money has been stolen by the math teacher. Now they have to organize a new one with very little money and they're not sure if everyone is going to go. They have a lot of things to do when the ...more

Ashley Hanigan is a senior in high school and will just barely graduate if she serves all of her detentions and pays her library fines. As for her future plans, she and her boyfriend, TJ, are going to move in together after high school. TJ didn't finish high school...in fact, he was kicked out of high school. Ashley has no interest in any school activities, preferring to spend her time with TJ. When one of the high school teachers steals the Prom funds, the students find out that the prom will ...more
This is the first Laurie Halse Anderson book I've read. I'm not a big fan of "problem" novels which seemed to be the basis of her three other popular books. But when I saw the cover of Prom, I couldn't resist. This book, I would guess, is lighter than her previous books but I would never categorize it as "cheesy". (Even though I do love cheesy books!)

Ashley Hannigan is a unique protagonist in a YA novel: she lives in Philadelphia, she’s not rich, not even middle class, her father drives a taxi and her mother a bus. She’s senior in high school and while she’s determined to graduate, she hates school, hates reading and has only sketchy ideas about what she’ll do after graduation. She doesn’t want to go to the prom, but her best friend Nat lives for it, has been on the planning committee since October. And the faculty advisor for the prom has j...more

Ashley and Natalia are best friends. However, Ashley hates the prom and wouldn't be caught dead attending, while Natalia is queen of the prom committee. However, things change fast when the math teacher steals the prom fund, and Ashley is roped into organizing the alternate prom with no money to her name.

Who couldn't love a book that references a Butterscotch Krimpet and the King of Prussia mall? I enjoyed reading this book and its silliness. Thought I was skeptical about an 18 year old girl dating a 19 year old drop-out, wife-beater-tee in-a-hoodie-type at the beginning and her seeming acceptance of being 'normal' and less successful in school, I was pleased to see the outcome of the story remain a bit more redeeming than one would expect based on the first chapters. Also, what I love is tha...more
Ashley Marie Hannigan is the main character in this prom night fairytale that takes place at Philadelphia High School. Ashley isn’t the go-all-out-on-prom type, however, her best friend Natalia is. Natalia is the head of the prom committee and Aisha, Junie, Monica, Lauren, and Dishelle are members who all consider this as the biggest night of their teenage lives. Everyone’s chatting about it, everyone’s looking forward to it, but not for long. So, what happens that just about ruined everythi...more
In this book, Prom, by Lauri Halse Anderson it talked about a group of girls on a prom committee trying to get ready and put together a real prom for the seniors in the high school. The main character, Ashley didn't care about prom, and had her own problems to deal with instead like fixing her apartment with her boyfriend, T.J. or babysitting her younger siblings. Her friends kept blabbing on and on about putting the prom together and one day, the found out that a math teacher in their school st...more

I'm trying to catch up on all my Laurie Halse Anderson books and so far this one tops my list! I loved Ashley and thought she was a great main character. There were so many great lines and I wish I could have quotes, but since I listened to this one on audio, it was hard to keep track.
The thing I loved most about this book was Ashley's family. I found her family to so refreshing. There's always YA books where the family is dysfunctional, the teens don't get along with the parents, o...more

Laurie Halse Anderson has long provided voice to the kind of teens that are overlooked by other authors – the lonely introvert in Speak, the college-obsessed Type A personality in Catalyst – and, in Prom, she turns her attention to the ‘normal’ kid. Ashley isn’t going to college; her ambitions don’t stretch further than having enough money to buy a car. She has plenty of friends, but she’s not the popular girl. She has a boyfriend, but it’s not exactly true love.

Prom was a little bit more light hearted than Anderson's other books. It portrayed some of the real issues teenagers face when prom rolls around. Unfortunately, the twist in the story where the teacher steals the prom money, is a reality in society today as well. Anderson's Prom characters represent all aspects of the prom. I've mentioned this before but Halse Anderson's Speak is one of my all time favorite books, YA or otherwise. I recently discovered that she's written a handful of other books, so I've been chugging through them. So far none has been anywhere near as well written as Speak, but Twisted and Catalyst were competent and better than most of that YA drivel that is out there.
Prom, however, is a complete turd. Total dud. Halse Anderson generally gives her characters a fantastic voice. He...more

Prom is a really good book. I think it's one of the best books I’ve ever read. This book is for people who like reading about the life of teenagers and their drama. Instead of focusing on prom, Ashley is trying to get through her senior year at Carceras High School. She juggles work, family, a boyfriend, and friendships in addition to schoolwork and never-ending detentions. It's not easy. Work involves dressing up in a rat costume and serving pizza to screaming kids at the EZ-CHEEZ-E restaurant....more
I had read two other books (Speak and Twisted) by the same author and had expected more of her. I could not relate to the main theme of the story (maybe because we don't have PROM here in India, or not at least in my time). This is the story of a mildly dysfunctional, but on the whole responsible 16 year old who is not dazzled by prom, but agrees to help her prom-crazy best friend, when their maths teacher snitches off the prom money and gets arrested for the same. I liked the main character - s...more
Eh...this book didn't really do it for me. I felt like there were parts where I was making myself read. Then there were some parts that I thought were sweet. I really liked Ashley's dad and Natalia's crazy grandma. I felt like they were the best characters in the book.
I could identify with this book though.I was in charge of my high school prom, and we didn't have a lot of funds. No there wasn't a scandal with a teacher, we just didn't do as much fundraising as we should have. We dec

Prom is a story about Ashley a senior in high school who really doesn't care about the prom or anything but being with her boyfriend and eventually moving out with her boyfriend. When her math teacher steals the prom money everything changes. Ashely's best friend Natalie is on the prom commitee and the prom is everything to her. Natalie guilts Ashley in helping out a bit, because she really needs her. She goes to a prom commitee meeting and she actually has some things to say. When everyone give...more
