About 1/5th of the way into this book, I realized that this book was what an upper middle-class, suburban girl would write if she was writing about "normal", lower middle class kids.
Anderson starts referring to the number of kids that are crack-whores, in jail, etc. but none of the characters in the book get into any kind of "serious" trouble. This is simply not the truth for large groups of lower middle class kids. Many lower middle class kids have friends who get into serious trouble. Ashley h...more

My first modern YA book that I've read for my class this semester. First of all, I forgot how awesomely easy it is to read at a lower reading level, these books are going to go fast!
I thought this book would be kind of cheesy, girly story about prom that would have existed in my day, a Sweet Valley High-like story, but I was pleasantly surprised. I've mentioned this before but Halse Anderson's Speak is one of my all time favorite books, YA or otherwise. I recently discovered that she's written a handful of other books, so I've been chugging through them. So far none has been anywhere near as well written as Speak, but Twisted and Catalyst were competent and better than most of that YA drivel that is out there.

This book "prom" is about a tradgedy that happend at school (more like a crime), and prom might be called off. Everyone now has to save the prom on time, and forget all about there lives.
its a good book, It had me sucked in on some parts, and bored on others, but in all it had a lot of action and things to look foward to reading. The characters are interesting and the drama is fantastic. i enjoyed reading this book, its given me so many laughs.

I really enjoyed this book because who doesn't like to read books about prom? It was romantic, at times, (if you read it, you'll know what I mean), and was really Girly and fun. I don't know if the movie Prom is based on this book because I haven't watched it in a long time, but I hope it is! A great quick read for any teenage girl wishing for their prom to come quicker. ;)
Anderson is one of our very favorite authors, and her sheer talent as a writer is what makes this book more than another fluffy, pink contribution to the uninspired drivel hawked to teenage girls. To be sure, _Prom_ is a lighter read than most of Anderson's other offerings; we love the idea of teenage girls finding her through this more accessible title and then moving on to some of her more challenging books (_Speak_, the _Seeds of America_ series, etc.). The narrator's voice is frank and real,...more

Young adult fans are not be messed with. We know that we want clever-antagonist, protagonist, plot and drama.
Laurie Halse Anderson delivers all that good stuff in "Prom", which opens in students being excited about prom. Later students are finding out that prom has been cancelled. One student heard that the reason prom has been cancelled because, the new math teacher had stole all the money earned for prom. Nat whop is the in charge of the prom committee is shocked and upset. The book I read was Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson. In this book, Ashley doesn't care about prom until she finds herself helping to plan for it. This book takes you through the drama of putting together prom, with the venue cancelling and a teacher stealing all of the money for it. Ashley is able to pull it off and is able to have the best night of her life. I really liked this book because of how realistic it was. I liked the drama that they had of the hotel that it was going to be hosted at can...more

The book Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson is a young adult, realistic fiction story about an eighteen-year-old girl named Ashley Hannigan (Ash, for short) who goes to Philadelphia high school and DOES NOT have any interest for the school prom. On the other hand, her best friend Natalia (Nat, for short) is the head of the prom committee and has been waiting for prom ever since she started high school, she has “prom stars in her eyes.” When the prom committee found out that the school faculty advisor...more

Prom by Laurie Halse Anderson features Ash, a lower class Philadelphia senior who is more interested in hanging out with her dropout boyfriend than the prom. But when the prom adviser is arrested for stealing the entire prom budget she somehow becomes in charge of organizing and fundraising to keep the prom alive.

Prom is a book about a group of girls trying to organize a prom after all the money for it was stolen. The math teacher stole the money and was arrested. Ashley the main character doesn’t really care for prom, but her best friend Nat lives for it. Nat is devastated when she hears about what happens. Ashley wants to help her friend so she tries to pull together a group of people to help her. With all the hard work they manage to get enough stuff together to make the prom possible. This is my introduction to Laurie Halse Anderson, of course I knew of her but this is my first hands on. I’ll admit I’m not much of one for “girly” books and when I had an Anthony Horowitz on one side of this and a Darren Shan on the other this teal cover with white limo and pink dress was the one that made me want to run the other way. Ashley Hannigan is a senior at a rough Philadelphia high school and she could care less about prom except for the fact that her best friend is obsessed with it....more
What is something that you think that you will never do in your entire life time? Well Ashley Hannigan was convinced that she would never go to her Senior Prom, or let alone get caught up in anything to do with it. On the other hand, her best friend, Nat, was the head of the Prom committee thought that Prom was all set and stone, until the big disaster. Now both Ashley and Nat find themselves doing what they never expected themselves to be doing.

ok, can we all agree on one crucial point before i commence: proms suck. they do. they're a lot of build up and hype and flash and glitter, but there's always puke or some girl crying her eyes out in the bathroom or some kid who gets wasted or brings drugs or breaks up with his girlfriend for a freshman. it's the acme of high school drama. with high heels. so, should we really expect that much from a book of the same name?
no.

Ashley Hannigan, a normal high school senior living just outside of Philadelphia, is not excited about the prom. Don't tell that to her mom, her aunts, or her next-door neighbor and best friend Nat, though -- they could not be more excited if they tried. Nat's on the prom committee, and everything is going well. That is, until Miss Crane, the prom committee chairperson, is busted for taking all the prom money. Just like that, it's all gone. No hotel, no food, no DJ, no security -- no prom. But N...more
Ashley Hannigan's plans for the future don't include the senior prom; they include things like squeaking through to graduate, moving out of her parents' crowded house and into a Philadelphia apartment with her high school dropout boyfriend. Those plans change when Miss Crane, the math teacher, embezzles all the prom money. Before she can say, "Too weird," Ashley finds herself choreographing a school gala that changes everything. Tender; funny; perceptive.

When a greedy faculty advisor ruins all hopes for a senior prom of epic proportions, Ashley could give a damn. In fact, she could give 2¢ about the final weeks of senior year. Who cares about making up all the missed detentions in order to attend the senior activities? Not Ashley. If only she wasn’t best friends with the Prom Committee chair who strongarms Ashley to helping to save prom. If only her mother and aunts hadn’t found out about it and insisted on taking Ashley on a shopping spree for...more
I enjoyed this book yet was irritated by it at the same time. I think the author does a great job at transporting you to the world of a high school seniors mind at the time when graduation is getting close and plans for the future are being made. I would not recommend this story to anyone.

Ashely Hannigan doesn't want anything to do with prom. She doesn't even want to go to prom. Until she raised her hand in the meeting suggesting advice to what they should do. That's when her friend Natalia wanted her to join the club. Somehow Ashley has been helping out on organizing for the prom since the money has been stolen by the math teacher. Now they have to organize a new one with very little money and they're not sure if everyone is going to go. They have a lot of things to do when the...more
Ashley Hanigan is a senior in high school and will just barely graduate if she serves all of her detentions and pays her library fines. As for her future plans, she and her boyfriend, TJ, are going to move in together after high school. TJ didn't finish high school...in fact, he was kicked out of high school. Ashley has no interest in any school activities, preferring to spend her time with TJ. When one of the high school teachers steals the Prom funds, the students find out that the prom will b...more
This is the first Laurie Halse Anderson book I've read. I'm not a big fan of "problem" novels which seemed to be the basis of her three other popular books. But when I saw the cover of Prom, I couldn't resist. This book, I would guess, is lighter than her previous books but I would never categorize it as "cheesy". (Even though I do love cheesy books!)

Ashley Hannigan is a unique protagonist in a YA novel: she lives in Philadelphia, she’s not rich, not even middle class, her father drives a taxi and her mother a bus. She’s senior in high school and while she’s determined to graduate, she hates school, hates reading and has only sketchy ideas about what she’ll do after graduation. She doesn’t want to go to the prom, but her best friend Nat lives for it, has been on the planning committee since October. And the faculty advisor for the prom has j...more
