Recommends it for: kids interested in solving puzzles & mysteries, science & nature, volcanoes
I was always interested in science but as a student in K-12 had few opportunities to learn it in a school setting. When I was in fifth grade, the two fifth grade classes and the two fourth grade classes divided up into 4 science groups. Even though it wasn’t with my favorite teacher, I chose the volcanoes class, and I really enjoyed it. (I don’t remember now what the other 3 subjects were but I believe they were all earth sciences.) I was reading this to my son bit-by-bit, and we even managed to almost-visit Mt. St. Helens earlier this month (we saw it in the distance... it so counts).

He LOVED it. So much that we are now re-reading it. It really spurred his interest in science, volcanoes, experiments, and everything Cascade Mountain-related (we did manage a trip up to Crater Lake, so he got some Volcano-related touristing done on the trip!)

Fantastic science book about the scientists who study Mt St. Helens. Full of pictures so that a 7 year old enjoys it and full of facts so that an adult enjoys it. 5 chapters.

Another great read from Elizabeth Rusch. This one's a bit better for school aged kids than littles.
