I've been curiously homesick for a certain kind of mental atmosphere- one that I think I was beginning to gleam when I was six, watching Cagney and Lacey on a borrowed television while my mom cooked dinner in the kitchen. It's a mentality of woman as sensuous, defiant, hard working, beautiful, maybe a little fragile but definitely tough, and deeply empowered by sisterhood, where the lines that link the oppression of women with class oppression are drawn clearly and undeniably, where the struggle...more

I read this book in college and loved it. In it, a happy woman slowly discovers that her happy home life is not as happy as she thinks. I still enjoyed the main story but found all the political undercurrents irritating.

I think my lesson might be to NOT re-read things that I loved in my early 20s. There have been several times lately where I have discovered that I am a totally different reader than I was back then.

Piercy made me hungry when I read this book! The protagonist, a cookbook author, spends much of her time trying out recipes by taking a basic formulation and then splitting it into a half dozen or more bowls to which she adds different combinations of spices and garnishes. After each one episode, I'd take a break and find something really scrumptious to eat! Then back to the story...

I love Marge Piercy's feminist fiction, even though it is a little dated. Sometimes it's a little jumpy and inconsistent, like it needed one more round of re-writing. Sometimes it is hard to believe. But the underlying story, that women can be strong and indpendent and right, is enjoyable. It reminds me of the Women's Room.

This was an interesting read; in parts it seemed a bit dated although the story was strong. The dialog was a bit stilted at times but I think this is an important book. It reminded me of the film an unmarried woman.

I am not aware of having read or started this already, but will have to see.. I'm aware of the name, so not sure. Sounds like some of her great content, intermixed with rushed text perhaps etc..

sort of typical Piercy post-feminist novel, but the ok writing elevated it above standard women beach books

You know, I can't remember if I've ever read this book before. I feel like I must have, because I've read all of Marge Piercy's novels except for two. But either I read this long ago and had forgotten it, or somehow I just missed it.

Anyway, I started off wanting to give it two stars, thinking, well, this is ok, I guess I'll finish it... It just frustrated me to see the main character so cruelly treated by her husband. However, I got into it and at the end didn't want to put it down. Nice to see...more

I likes this one from the start. Kept me wondering. On to another Marge Piercy book for me.

I started reading this book about a year ago and couldn't get into it, but I like Piercy's poetry so much I had to try again. I'm glad I did, because this time it clicked for me, and so many things in this book were oddly resonant, synchronous even.

This is my favorite of Piercy's books; I've read and reread it. As someone who recently went through a painful divorce, I totally relate to the main character, Daria's, metamorphosis into an independent woman.

Read this 99 years ago. Don't remember much about it except it was a pleasure. Something about a house fire, a move and a mom who had good neighbors and friends.
