Jennie Rakowsky had a daughter out of wedlock as a young college student. Unwilling to consider abortion, she went to a home for unwed mothers, had the baby and immediately gave her up for adoption. She then moved forward with her life, putting this difficult time behind her. Now, almost 20 years later she is a successful lawyer and advocate of women's rights and is engaged to be married. Out of the blue she receives a phone call from an agency stating that her daughter would like very m...more
If this had been the first Belva Plain book I had ever read, I certainly wouldn't pick up another. The lead female character was weak and simpering and spent much of her time wailing about her life and not being able to face anything (despite being described throughout the book as a strong women's advocate lawyer) and the plot was predictable and boring. I'm all for a light, guilty pleasure read, but there wasn't any pleasure in this for me, just a lot of eye-rolling.

At thirty-six, Jennie Rakowsky's life couldn't be better. She was engaged to a wonderful man, her career as a lawyer was skyrocketing and she was never more beautiful. Then a secret from nineteen years ago threatened to shatter it all. I really love Belva Plain's books. I think she is a wonderful writer and I give the story an A+! I definitely love books about family relationships rather then straight romance.
Looking at this one again...read another of Belva's other novels that was interesting and remember this one being about adoption. I am fully aware of what it is like to be adopted...but what is it actually like for the mother who gives up her baby...hummm.
I really enjoyed this book. Brings to light that nothing good comes from keeping secrets especially from those you plan to build a future with. A quick read but with a happy ending, just the way I like it:)
I am seriously starting to develop a feel for Belva Plain. She and her characters have a way of making even an overused plot seem effective enough to keep me interested. In this particular novel, we meet a woman with a secret resurrected from her past and how this particular glitch affects her present and almost ruins her future. And how, through it all, she learns to accept and live by the truth and eventually rediscovers a finer shade of happiness in the end.
A good tale about domestic violence and how a woman finally decides to make the decision to start a new life.
A bit contrived and predictable, but Belva Plain is always a quick and entertaining read.
I found this book at our cottage and read it in a couple days. Good beach read.
a romantic chick novel, but interesting and well written.
Belva Plain, always a good story.
An ordinary book but interesting about what can happen with adoptions and people's lives.
I think this is the last Belva Plain book I will read. I find her stories much the same and I can't get past the lack of morals the characters show. Whether this makes me a prude or not, I'm glad I still think pre-marital relations are inappropriate.
I got the book from my colleague from the previous work place. It was battered, wrinkled with yellowing pages due to its age. I've found it interesting so far.
A very light "beach read" that takes no brain power. I read this in Steamboat Springs during one of our ski vacations. Not so well written.
Jenny gets knocked off her feet when ehr secret comes knocking at her door. Can she face the past and carry on with her furure?
