"The Hello, Goodbye Window" is a cute story about a little girl and the hello, goodbye window that is in the kitchen of her grandparent's home. This window is everything for this little girl! She can look in it, around it, inside of it, and outside of it. She looks outside of it to see what the weather is like, if the next door dog is laying next to Nana's flower bed, or you can look outside to say goodnight. This window takes on a life of it's own and for this little girl it is the centerpiece...more
I love this book. The pictures are beautiful water-color illustrations that show the memories recounted through a child-like impression. The memories and events that occur in the story are very relatable because most children and even teens, remember visiting their grandparents and the many warm memories that are associated with it. These memories help to make the book evoke emotion and happiness and the bright colors and the almost messy detail in the illustrations are great at aiding the depic...more
I don't really like the cover of this book, and am not too interested in Raschka's style. It seems really clownish and garish (not always, but in this book for sure). But he also controls it very well, and I find his compositions and human expressive use of human figures to be in a tight complementary relationship with the text. It moves between symmetrical and complementary, never working into contradictory illustration.

The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster and illustrated by Chris Raschka was a sweet story about a little girl who has a special window at her Nanna and Poppy's house. Through this window she can say hello and goodbye to them or imagine a whole new world. This book is a Caldecott winner, and I can see why. The illustrations really grabbed my attention. They were almost an abstract kind of drawing with vibrant colors. The only things that weer not very abstract were the drawings of the people....more
"The Hello, Goodbye Window" is an adorable book about a little girl at her grandparents house and the bond she shares with them. The grandparents house is special because it has a hello, goodbye window that is frequently brought up throughout the story. The window becomes magical through imagination. The pictures in the book are big and colorful as they are expressed by paintings that are not fully clear which could be looked upon as a positive or a negative of the story. This book is a good rea...more

This book is about the adventures that a little girl has at her grandparents’ house, with a special window called the “Hello, Goodbye Window.” There are many meaningful activities that happen near or through the window. For instance, in the kitchen (where the window is located) is where the girl’s Nanna and Poppy make breakfast. At night, the three of them look out of the Hello, Goodbye Window to count the stars in the sky. The illustrations in the book are various scribbles that add texture and...more

"The Hello, Goodbye Window" by Norton Juster is a an adorable book from a little girl's perspective. It's all about this magic window in which everything important happens near it, through it, or beyond it. The narrator of the book is nameless, but you can tell by the dialogue that it is a little girl who is seeking adventure and is loved by both of her grandparents. The illustrations are quite messy by very colorful and very childlike. I can understand how it won the Caldecott Award in 2006 bec...more

Summary: A young girl, whose name is not mentioned, spends time at her grandparents house. Their house has a huge window the overlooks the front yard and its used for more than just looking outside.

Telling this book from a child's perspective made the story very enchanting. In A Ball for Daisy I did not really care for Chris Raschka's illustrations, but in this story I think that they were perfect. The blurred images with unclear edges looked almost as if a child could have drawn them. It was cool how I was able to relate to the grandparents as well as to the child who was talking in the story. I think that the author did an excellent job of making the story sound just like a child talking...more
This is a lovely story about a boy and his grandparents, revolving around the window between the yard and the kitchen. It's the first picture book by Norton Juster, who wrote The Phantom Tollbooth, and it's illustrated by heavily-honored Chris Raschka, so you'd expect it to be pretty good. It is, and I think kids will like it, though the art is not really my style. It's very textured and has an abstract quality to it. What I do like, though, is that because of the illustration style, you can't r...more

Since this book is a Caldecott winner, I immediately looked at the pictures to see what it was that stood out. I noticed that the pictures are very child-like and they look like they are quickly painted. The colors are very vibrant and very interesting--the pictures aren't really like any you have seen in other children's books.

The Hello, Goodbye Window is about a little girl who visits her grandparents and tells about the different things she does at their house. Her parents drop her off at their house and she sees them through the kitchen window before she even gets inside. The whole story keeps coming back to this window that can become anything through imagination. The little girl uses the window to make faces and scare her parents sometimes. It’s a nice tale because it is memories that many children could have at...more
Norton Juster and Chris Raschka's "The Hello, Goodbye Window" certainly proved itself worthy of receiving the Caldecott Award. This book tells the story of a kitchen window at a little girl's grandparent's house. This window is far more than just a piece of glass. Instead, it is a gateway to adventure and is extremely important to the little girl. In the book, the little girl describes all the wonderful things she likes about the window and details what exactly she sees through the special windo...more
Located in the kitchen of Nanna and Poppy's home is a window that holds magical powers. Anyone or anything can come along and visit, including the Queen of England! You can predict the weather or watch the neighbor's dog by simply looking through its glass. But perhaps the most significant quality of the window is its special place in the heart of a little girl. This story demonstrates the true nature of childhood and the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. Every page is a journ...more
The Hello, Goodbye Window was a good book. The pictures in it took up the whole page, but looked as if they were water painted, not as if they were drawn. It has a youngster feeling to it and I think it would totally catch the attention of children with how different the drawings look from other books. I feel like it can really relate to many children and their times/memories of their grandparents house. So, in a way it is like an escape to grandma and grandpa’s house through a book. A little t...more

Norton Juster's The Hello, Goodbye Window is a sweet story about a girl describing a usual trip to her grandparents. She calls their kitchen window the Hello, Goodbye Window.
