I didn’t fully appreciate him until becoming an adult, perhaps proving his argument that he wasn’t the children’s author that people always thought. Like lots of people, i was raised on “Where the Wild Things Are” and used the term “wild rumpus” as often as possible but never took the effort to search out his other works. It's like reading an extended book (life) review of a friend from a dear friend, subjective and deeply considered. Kushner manages to create a pretty great introduction for any adult looking to dig deeper into Sendak's work. I was totally clueless about all of Sendak's opera life and its influence on his later books and just.. I dunno, this book fills in the gaps. Sendak's love of Mozart, all his great artistic loves.
