Frances Loves PBJ's and in the mothers infinate wisdom she blesses Frances with PBJ's at every turn. As Frances sings her feelings from enthusiasm to forced conviction she slowely comes to the realization that variety is not a bad thing and ventures to ask for the spaghetti that others are eating. I love the rationales Frances provides for not eating certain food "but sunny side up eggs lie on teh plate and look up at you in a funny way and sunny-side-down eggs lie on their stomachs and <...more

A cautionary story for picky eaters, Bread and Jam for Frances succeeds in avoiding didacticism by allowing Frances to figure out on her own that she might like trying new foods beyond bread and jam. She comes to this conclusion slowly, adding to the story’s drawling charm, as she encounters her friends and family members enjoying an array of delicious foods while she has only bread and jam for every meal. The sentence line-breaks were distracting and added unnecessary reading difficult...more

Well, everyone knows about Frances but we hadn't read it yet so I thought I'd better take care of that before my kids were branded as weird.

They liked the story and the silly songs she made up. They could appreciate the humor of it since they are somewhat picky themselves.

It is a bit of a long read, but they wanted to finish it in a day and it held their attention the whole time.

I'll read this again for the little ones when they're a bit older.

Such a sweet series...my mom used to read these books to me when I was little. There was always a "moral of the story" of course but it was written with such a sweet and innocent style that I begged her to read them over and over again.

Frances loves jam and bread, in fact she turns up her nose at other kinds of food. So her mother starts giving her jam and bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Frances starts to realize that variety is a good thing.

Never much of a bread-and-jam girl myself, I remember being particularly enamored of Albert's awesome four-course vegetarian lunch, complete with tiny cardboard shaker of salt.

Frances of course has to one-up him at the end with her own five-course lunch that includes a relish tray and, naturally, a tiny cardboard shaker of salt -- plus a tiny vase of violets, plus a tiny basket to hold her cherries. What an elaborate lunchbox that girl must have had.

Even though I don't actually like most of the foods that comprise Frances' particular diet (barring bread and jam, of course), the book always made me really hungry anyway. Adventures in food are such a huge part of growing up, and no book I can presently recall understands, or represents with such joy, the endlessly aggravating, impossible to predict, and hilariously beautiful relationship that kids have with their lunch.

The cheerful, occasionally wily, always tender Frances the Badger reads like a tempered forerunner to the irascible Olivia the Pig. All of the Frances books are a delight, and, as with the best of children's literature, the illustrations are every bit as good as the text. (BONUS NOTE: Frances here taught me [at an embarassingly late age] that FrancEs is for girls and FrancIs is for boys. Editor much?)

Another great Francis book ..

Francis decides to dig her heels in and refuses to eat anything but Bread and Jam ...but over time she begins to realize that maybe bread and jam isn;t the ONLY yummy thing in the world . Teaches kids that you CAN have too much of a good thing :-)

Perfect for parents with a little picky eater .

This is one of my favorite children's books. It begins with Frances not interested in eating anything but bread and jam. The story tells how she learned a good lesson about eating. My favorite parts are the little songs she sings to her food and the detailed descriptions of her and her friend's lunches at school. Very cute book.

Mommy says: A classic, as are all the Frances books. Story of a little badger who won't eat anything but bread and jam. What happens when her Mommy decides to give her only what she wants? Moms of picky eaters may be interested in the results. And picky eaters may find the story enlighteneing and even behavior-changing!

I've loved this adorable badger since childhood. The challenge in reading them aloud to kids is to get her singing voice just right... and which melody to choose of course. I still laugh over the 50's style lunch spread... complete with table decor and little salt and pepper shakers.

This was one of my favorite books as a child. I still love this poem:
"poached eggs on toast
why do you shiver
with such a funny little quiver."
A must own for children and anyone with children or people that merely like or tolerate children occasionally. Also picky eaters.

Stubborn and opinionated, Frances was one of my favorite characters as a kid - I could relate so well. She refuses to eat anything but bread and jam until she is no longer offered any more options....and realizes she might like to have something else after all!

One of my favorite growing up. It was a book that I owned (given to me by friends of my parents) and that I read over and over for years. The warm family relationships are very appealing, and I still love this as an adult, and enjoy reading it to my kids.

I learned to read by memorizing Frances books from a 45. Seriously! My parents used to show me off when I was 3 because I was "reading." I still have them memorized and one of my favorite things to do it read it to the little people in my life.

my 2 year old daughter and I read this almost every day.She loves it and love the "little songs" Frances sings. If you're a parent of a finicky eater, this book will give you a great idea for helping your child WANT to try different foods!

My favorite Frances book. It inspired me to only eat grape jelly on hamburger rolls (seriously) for probably an entire summer when I was about 5 or 6. Love the songs in this one - What DO cutlets wear before they're breaded???

Bea loves the Frances books and they really are a hoot I think. This one has such funny little songs and complaints about food which we have to hear repeatedly when we serve those foods, but the book is cute enough to keep reading.

Frances is such a clever darling with her spontaneous songs and spunky personality. I know someone else who was once a bread-and-jam girl, but she learned, as does Frances, to be more adventuresome in her eating.

This was a silly book about a little raccoon that won't eat anything but bread and jam, bread and jam, and bread and jam. It is really funny and cute, and the illustrations are great. :)
