I was reading this one for WAY too long but, admittedly, it was awfully difficult to get into. The book is divided into ten chapters, each of them is supposed to introduce a different figure from those times – a monk, a knight, a merchant etc. Each one of these chapters is an article written by a different author. Sounds great, sounds up my alley, but in fact about half of it was a mild torture to go through. First off, some chapters were more absorbing than others, not because of their subject, ...more

I suppose the idea could have worked (vignettes written by respected scholars of medieval history), but this a case where the work is something less than the sum of its parts. As would be expected from having multiple authors, there really wasn't a lot of continuity between the segments and the overall quality was very mixed. I can't recall anything written in this book that I haven't found elsewhere in other works, so there's really nothing compelling to recommend it.

It's not bad or unreadable

I don't have the languages to compare with the originals, but I get the sense that the English translation is not of the highest quality. The chapters vary quite a lot in readability, sometimes due to organization, sometimes due to possibly indifferent translation. I do like the concept, a series of type-portraits, and there is quite a lot of information to be absorbed.

Le Goff è storico di razza, e questo libro è forse la cosa più divulgativa che abbia scritto. Utile per avvicinarsi al suo mondo, assolutamente superfluo se avete letto altro dell'autore.

A prolific medievalist of international renown, Le Goff is sometimes considered the principal heir and continuator of the movement known as Annales School (École des Annales), founded by his intellectual mentor Marc Bloch. Le Goff succeeded Fernand Braudel in 1972 at the head of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and was succeeded by François Furet in 1977. Along with Pierre ...more
