Very different from the film, it'll be interesting to read a few more of this series. It's set out as a diary too.

Sometimes it seems like all I ever do is lie.
My mom thinks I'm repressing my feelings about this. I say to her, 'No, Mom, I'm not. I think it's really neat. As long as you're happy, I'm happy.'
Mom says, 'I don't think you're being honest with me.'

This is a great book! I just started reading because I saw the movie, but this book is fantastic! It is a diary of a 14-year-old girl named Mia in New York City who thinks she is complete freak and invisible. She is given a hard time at school and even from her closest friend. But one day her dad takes her out to eat and tells her she is heir to the royal throne of a made-up, tiny European country called Genovia. Her life then takes off when everyone starts treating her different even though she...more

I've read two books in this series (The Princess Diaries and Princess in the Spotlight) and two mini-books in this series (Project Princess and The Princess Present), and they're pretty good books but I doubt I will read any of the others.
At first, the hysterical "Good grief, could my life GET any weirder?" tone is funny, but it ultimately starts to wear on you. Princess Mia's best friend Lilly is also funny at first, but ultimately I got tired of her a...more

When the book first came out, I was not interested. When the movie helped publicize the book, I watched the movie. I thought it was very interesting and good. I usually only watch the movie and don't read the book, but I felt the book would be good. It caught my attention immediately because she was this unpopular girl who was flunking algebra and her mother was having an affair with her algebra teacher. Then she finds out that her grandmother, the mother of her passed away father was the queen ...more

I never got around to reading this when I was the protagonist Mia's age, and since the book and movie series became so popular, I recently decided to take a trip back to childhood and finally read this book. It was a quick read, thankfully, but I didn't find it nearly as endearing as the movie version (which is substantially different from the novel). The book seemed awfully light on plot and substance. Character development was minimal, and as a result, most of the characters (including Mia) we...more

Man, I loved these. They're very funny... problem is they're really only good the first time around, and only when you read them just when they've come out... and uh... probably also only if you're fourteen and without a boyfriend.. The jokes date themselves very quickly (like the constant references to "Blue Crush" in a later book... though it's considered a classic 'round the Johnston house). They also don't actually make sense in terms of time continuity. (Almost all of) the books w...more

Girls looking for fun fluff
I'm going through a fluff period right now, so this was a perfect choice. I'd actually tried to read it once before, but just hated it. The movie, which I loved, had just come out, and the book is different in enough ways to annoy me. At the time I was also having a lot of difficulty reading, and I think the voice in which it's written just increased that.
Anyway, I recently picked it up to give it another shot, and enjoyed it just fine. Reading's not so hard for me now, and I've got enou...more

I'm going to rate the entire series at once. The first book I would actually give three stars, because it was enjoyable. It had a light-hearted tone, and the teenage love story was cute.
Now, I picked up these books because I knew my daughter would probably want to read them in the future, and I'm glad I did. Once you get further into the series, it's pretty formulaic: the heroine has one problem she's obsessing about, other stuff happens, but eventually her problem gets resolved. Unfortunat...more

those who enjoy the occasional chick-flick/brain candy/guilty pleasure read
I can't deny it, I love anything Meg Cabot, I can't help it! Maybe it's the fairytale-esque plot structures that attract me... Consider it my guilty pleasure I guess... Her novels do not contain impressive diction, profound characterization, or complex plot lines. But they are nonetheless endearing. The characters are intensly likable and are easy to identify with, (you could see them being your quirky and somewhat shallow best friend, although sometimes you just feel like shaking them by the s...more

This book is another onw of my favorites. This book is about a teenage girl Mia Thermopolis that is not the most popular girl in school until her grandmother comes to visit. She cleary states that she was the queen of Genovia and since her father died its Mia' turn to be princess. This leaves Mia to choose whether she should or she shouldn't. Mia is forced to take princess lessons until she has made up her desicion. Mia suddenly becomes a changed girl she is popular and has a the guys falling to...more

The princess diaries series is about a girl who finds out she's a princess. You have probably seen the movies. But the books are really good too. The main caracter Mia is a normal girl at a school where she doesn't really fit in,except her friend Lily does not fit in either so they are friends (they do like each other too, not only because of that reason). Mia's grandmother one day comes to her town to tell Mia that she is a princess. At first Mia does not believe it but she does eventually find...more

After reading All-American Girl, which I liked, I was quite disappointed by The Princess Diaries. Mostly, this was because I didn't like Mia. To begin with, it seems unreasonable to me that she would never suspect her father might be a prince, what with her knowing he is a politician (she jokes at one point that he "runs the country") who happens to share the exact same name as the prince of Genovia. Then, there's the way she makes comments that, in my opinion, exempli...more

Well, considering I had to read this to see if it was going to be OK for my daughter to read (after seeing the Disney movie - because we know there's virtually no relation between a Disney movie and the book it's made from). It took me a bit to get used to that actual diary entry communication vehicle, but it turned out pretty well. The book is well written, you just have to get past the not so subtle hammering on all the vegan, Greenpeace, etc. theme's the author puts in the book (it does get w...more

Wow. Flashback to high school. This book was written from a private school freshman's perspective in 2000 on the east coast and I graduated from a west coast public school in 1998, but so much was the same.
Honestly, with a 10 year anniversary coming up, this made me want to hop onto my facebook and myspace accounts to catch up with old friends.
No, I'm no princess. But I can relate to the whole "high school sucks" mentality. I also got to brush up on some math throughout the...more

This is a really easy book to read and because I'm in the middle of studying, it's nice to have such an easy flowing book. I actually only chose this book because my mom and I really enjoy the movie. It's cute! So I thought the book would be too. It is. Just, very different from the movie. If you love the movie, you might not like the differences in the story in the book. But, if you can separate one from the other like me, then you might just enjoy it. More of a teen book than I'm used to but I...more

This book was really sweet and romantic.I really likes it because i love fairytales and this book really reminded me of a fairytale. Its about a freshmen girl named Mia Thermopolis, an average high school girl whos flunking algebra. In the story she finds out that shes the princess of Genovia. She was shocked and didn't want to accept the truth.
