Truth be told, I read Harry Potter series because a number of critics and authors compared Fablehaven to it(and yes, I just read Harry Potter this year. Please, don’t kill me.) I wanted to prolong the pleasure in reading the entire Fablehaven series so I didn’t read the 2nd book immediately after the 1st one. I finally decided to revisit Fablehaven because I wanted to read something magical, just in time for the holiday season.

The Sorenson sibling are on their last days of the the school year, but for Kendra it isn’t as easy as she thought it would be. There’s suddenly a new guy in her class and every girl thinks that he’s uber hot. Kendra thought the joke’s on her because what she sees is a boy with hideous features, someone comparable to a goblin. She realized that it was indeed a goblin and of course, she’s the only one who can see it as she’s the only one who has the ability to see past through the magical veil that deceives the normal human eye, an ability she received from the fairies on her first visit to the Fablehaven.

Kendra, knowing that the goblin is up to something mischivous, seeked the help of her smart-mouthed, drastic younger brother, Seth. As she expected, Seth can offer nothing other than his sarcastic remarks. When a mysterious man named Errol shows up, offering his help to eliminate the goblin, they reluctantly accepts it. Kendra and Seth didn’t know that the eliminating the goblin is only the first in the chain of events that will lead them to spending another summer at Fablehaven. Another summer filled with magic, schemes, betrayals, and Seth messing up with the creatures mainly setting up a C-size battery-to-gold exchange business with the satyrs.

What I love the most about Fablehaven is how easy it is for Brandon Mull to break, crumble, and pound the wall that separates reality and fantasy. Before I know it, I was completely suckied into the land of Fablehaven filled with both colorful and sinister creatures. The rules he set on his fictional land are just wickedly cool. Fablehaven, a magical creatures preserv e, is certainly one of those fictional places – along with Hogwarts, Camp-Half Blood, etc., – that will make you wish that they really exists. Brandon Mull really do tests and expands the boundaries of the reader’s imagination.

Seth and Kendra is a very powerful tandem, too. I know we’ve already seen a lot of siblings whose hobby is to bicker in fiction, but Seth and Kendra by far is my favorite. They just compliment each other perfectly. Seth’s naughtiness and immaturity balances well Kendra’s goody good attitude, while Kendra’s doubts and uncertainties balances well Seth’s admirable, daredevilish bravery.

The plot are no less superb. It was a tad bit darker than the first one but definitely more engrossing. The solution to the whoddunit mystery going on isn’t a giveaway. We’re at the same pace on unveiling the culprit as the characters in the book, unlike other fantasy novels in which we’re always two-steps ahead. The surprises hidden on Brandon Mull’s sleeve is seemingly infinite and he just keeps pulling one until the very last page. This careful plotting of the mystery produced a solidly characterized culprit. The culprit was three-dimensional, and being a huge sucker for well-characterized ‘villains’, I am satisfied.

Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star is another highly imaginatve book with the perfect balance of magic, sweetness, innocence, and danger. If you love watching Disney Pixar movies, then this book is for you. I love visiting the magical creatures preserve that is Fablehaven, and I’m already looking forward to my next one.(less)

The events in Rise of the Evening Star pick up months after where Fablehaven left off. It continues the adventures of Kendra and Seth Sorensen as they become embroiled in an insidious plot by the forces of evil to obtain powerful, magical items and unleash a nearly unstoppable horror.

Mull deftly continues to add to the wonders of the world that is Fablehaven, giving the reader new exciting storyline and plots while nimbly threading in those from the previous book.

Kendra and Seth can't wait for the end of the school year so that they can return to visit their grandparents at Fablehaven. A few days before the school year ends, a scabby kobold appears in her class. The kobold appears normal to everybody except Kendra. I think this book was better then the first. I am still not drawn to the main characters. I wish Kendra would take some more initiative and try to find out what her talents and powers are from being made fairy kind. There is so much build up to that and it is left hanging again in this book like it was in the first. I wish Seth would set a better example in the book, he is constantly disobeying, I was not thrilled with the things the children did in this book, i.e. sneaking out of their parents...more

Kendra and Seth return to Fablehaven to discover more of what they don't know (and that can kill them) and save the day. Seth, now a year older, is a little wiser and doesn't find himself in as much trouble, but again, it is Kendra who comes through.

By the way, in both books, while Kendra is the reluctant heroine, she is helped by others, so this isn't some supergirl of unlimited capabilities or powers.

I liked the sequel to Fablehaven even better than Fablehaven itself. The author was able to flesh out the characters and each gained a lot of depth.

I read Fablehaven last night, and the sequel, Rise of the Evening Star, tonight, so they're quick reads at 3-4 hours each. (Thank you writer's strike and sick, clingy kids who INSIST on me holding them and not minding me reading at the same time!!!)

GREAT writing. If you liked Harry Potter, you'll LOVE this one. The writing is tighter, the characters not as....angst-filled, a little more real, I think.
The world is so beautiful and yet real-feeling. There is a great sense of morality without the SLAP of it in your face. NO force feeding here, just a delightful romp, jog and then a mad-dash to the climax in a world of majesty and power that is both magical and compelling.

As this series continues, my sheer awe and incredulity increases. These books are just plain awesome.
This book picks up nearly a year after the end of book one. So, although there's a pretty big span of time covered, the characters retain their previous awesomeness of the first book. Fablehaven, Rise of the Evening Star is the second book in the Fablehaven series. In the beginning of this story a strange new kid comes to school at the end of the school year. Every girl is in love with him, but Kendra who sees him as a goblin with warts all over his face. Kendra is the only one who can see what he looks like because she was fairy struck, which means she can see the magical creatures nobody else can. The conflict in the story begins with the meeting of a man named Errol who tells Kendra, a normal teenage girl, and Seth her brother, a normal pre-teen boy that he can get rid of the goblin. The only way they can get him away is by stealing a statue which bites Seth. Before Kendra and Seth go on a mission with Errol they get a phone call from their grandparents who are the caretakers of a magical preserve called Fablehaven. Their grandparents tell Kendra and Seth not to go with Errol because he is part of a group trying to get rid of Fablefaven. When Kendra and Seth get to Fablehaven it seems like a life or death race to save it once again and collect an artifact.
At the beginning I really enjoyed reading the book, but as it started getting to the part where they visited their grandparents it starts to repeat and explains what happened in the first book, which I already have read. The beginning moved very fast with short chapters which I enjoyed because I felt like I was zipping right through the book. However, once I got to the middle the chapters it started to drag on, which took me while to read through and got boring.
The characters in the book were both hard and easy to relate to. There were many characters that were in some way magical so there was no way I could relate to that. But, sometimes when a character spoke, I thought I would say something like that if I was in their situation or I would do that too. The character I am most like is Kendra because in the beginning when she is at school she is a normal teenage girl with all the dumb girl drama and the falling for boys.
In this book Fablehaven Rise of the Evening Star the author, Brandon Mull, used a style of writing which totally described situations like sibling fighting. He described a fight between Kendra and Seth exactly the way I would fight with my sister. Also the author gave hints about what the characters were going to do in the titles of the chapters. By doing this I could kind of get a feeling of what the chapter was going to be about. I would suggest this book to people who enjoy reading fantasy novels and who have the time really concentrate on all of the detailed explanations.

One of the many mystical teenager stories that became the next hot thing after the success of Harry Potter, this second part of the series holds together well enough on its own even for non-potterites. With a sufficiently original mythology, brisk pacing and nice set-pieces this is an entertaining read but probably won't set your imagination on fire.

The setting of this book is the land of Fablehaven, which is a refuge for mythical and magical creatures. You have to drink the special milk from the giant cow to see these creatures in their real forms in Fablehaven.

The main characters in this book are Seth and Kendra. Seth is a boy who is the younger brother of Kendra. He has lots of courage and likes adventures. Kendra is a girl who can see the mythical and magical creatures without drinking the special milk. She also is the commander of the puppet Mendigo. Another main character is Warren who is a centaur. He is like a care-taker for Seth and Kendra.

The main antagonist in the book is Olloch the glutton. Olloch is trying to take over all of Fablehaven. He eats Seth and then after a while, Olloch poops Seth out while Seth was inside of the cacoon that Coulter put on him before the revenant killed both of them. The revenant ends up killing Coulter.

In the beginning of the book I learned that Errol Fisk works for the Rise of the Evening Star, which is an ancient organization determined to enter Fablehaven and steal a hidden artifact of great power. Errol acts like he is Seth and Kendra's friend, but he isn't really their friend. He convinces Seth to steal the statue(Olloch) and tells him to feed it. The statue was stolen from a man that was gone on his 90th birthday. The 90 year old man lived in a mortuary. Errol told Kendra and Seth that the 90 year old man was bad. It turns out he was actually good. Their grandpa told them that his friend had something stolen from him while he was away on his 90th birthday. The 90 year old man put a sign on the statue that said "DO NOT FEED!" They fed it and then it came alive and it was Olloch the glutton. The rest of the story is about Olloch trying to take over Fablehaven, while Seth and Kendra try to stop him. They are also trying to stop Vanessa and Errol from finding and getting the powerful artifact. You'll have to read the rest of the story to find out the ending!

There were two quotes that I liked in the book. "We could both die," Kendra said. "But there is danger everywhere at Fablehaven today. I'll come with you." (page 372) I liked this quote because it showed that even though they were in a life and death situation, they stuck together as brother and sister to the end. The second quote I liked was on page 214, "Nobody hates you. They just want you to be cautious, so you'll be safe. The only reason they get mad is because they care about you." I liked this quote because again it shows how much Kendra cares about her brother.

I think that one of the themes in the book is if at first you don't succeed, then try, try again. Example of this is when Dale keeps trying to cure his brother Warren and says that he'll never stop trying.

I think everyone would like this book especially kids my age and older. It is a really good book, but I recommend you read the first Fablehaven book before this one (it makes more sense that way). (less)

Fablehaven is flat and forgettable. There is plenty of action and adventure, but it is soon forgotten when the book is finished.

I spent a month trying to get this from my little tiny branch of my local library and when I did I wondered if I hadn't over-hyped myself on it. I remember the first book being so, so good, while this one felt so-so good.

The setting in this book is in the beginning they are at school then, they of course go to Fablehaven. The setting of the school could be changed but, the setting of Fablehaven could not be changed. A little sneak peek of the book is Kendra and Seth are at school and there is a new guy in school but, everyone sees him different then Kendra. They meet some guy who tells them how they can get rid of the strange creature, but they find out that he isn’t who he says he is. So they travel to Fablehaven to find out what is going on but, have trouble on the way to Fablehaven by the same guy and his friend. When they get to Fablehaven they find out what is going on and they train to be ready to take over the magical place of Fablehaven for their grandfather. In their journey they have some troubles. Read the book to find out more.
The characters are very well put and are very descriptive like Kendra she is the follower, the honest, and the caring one. Seth is the curious, non follower, and smart one. My favorite part in this book is when the man tells Seth to go find a frog statue so that they can get the strange creature to leave their school. One of the themes in this story is you are never too young to create or have your own adventure.
Some great quotes from this book are “I think I am in love” Allyssa said. “Don’t be mean” Kendra muttered, on page 3. I also liked “Are we really going to drive away with him in that thing?” Kendra mumbled, on page 31.
I would guarantee this book to people who like adventure and fantasy because, this book has basically just those categories in it. This book is unique because, it has all kinds of mythical creatures in it and other mythical creatures I have never heard of. The rating I would give this book would be a 3.5 or 4.
This was one of the best books I have ever read. If you haven't read it yet it is a must read. It is exciting and enjoyable. Can't wait to start reading the next book!(less)

All right. This book was a mess. By about page 300 I was just zipping through it, so as to have the vital information for the next installment, because A and C promised it gets better. Sigh.

As usual, Mull delivers on imaginative world building, and the pace never slows, but his logical foundation is so weak I don't dare examine it--one too-direct breath could knock the whole thing over.

More action-packed and more tightly focused on events than the first book, which some will love and some, like me, will find a bit tedious. I wanted to hear more about some good creatures in the refuge, but felt like this book was almost exclusively evil creatures and bad guys. When the Boston Bruins were playing Vancouver Canucks in the Stanley, Cup Final, Vancouver was up 2-0 in the series and in game 3 the Boston Bruins got their first win in the series. When you're late to read popular series, the upside is they are all available at the library, no waiting. The downside is you end up reading 1,000 pages of childrens literature and nothing else for a week.

Fablehaven is growing on me. Seth still isn't really (it's maddening why nobody ever just chains him to a chair in times of crisis).
