A bus load of deaf girls are taken hostage by a ruthless bank robber and he is going to shoot one an hour till his demands are met. In this case, being deaf has its rewards.

Twists and turns ensue that keep the reader's attention. I wanted more, I really wanted this one to last longer. This is only two cassettes long, but the action seems like it ought to be contained on four. A great story.

recommends it for: Crime novel buffs
A friend recommended this book because she knew of my interest and work in sign language, but there is so much more here. The twists through multiple views of a story where a criminal detective is reading the mind of a deranged hostage takers and terrified students their teacher struggle to communicate with and escape from these same is absolutely riveting.

A very suspenseful story of a hostage taking involving a school bus of deaf girls.
I learned a lot about deaf people while reading this. It's great to come away from a novel with new insight. Assuming, of course, Deaver was on the mark. I wouldn't know.
I'd like to know what deaf people thought of this.

This was one of the first books I ever read by Jeffrey Deaver. It's about two men who kidnap some deaf school girls on a field trip who then outwit them because of their ability to speak in ASL. It's really a GREAT thriller and was especially a fun read for me because of my hearing issues.

My favorite Deaver book has a hard-hitting female protagonist who is deaf and trying to keep her deaf students from freaking out. I loved it because it was thoughtful and intense. It seriously keeps the reader on the edge for the entire twisting plot.

A good page-turner - lots of suspense. It's full of hostages and killing and twists and turns. This was a good change of pace from reading Young Adult fiction - just a good inbetween book - full of good guys and bad guys!

This is the very first Deaver book I read and I couldn't put it down. Don't love all the books I've read of his - seems a little inconsistent to me when you compare across but about 4 of them where great page turners.

I've read a few of Jeffrey Deaver's books and this one remains my favourite. Some shocking twists that made me jump as though I were watching a film. I left my copy in Italy and want it back on my shelf.

Someone loaned this to me. Didn't know anything about it, but needed a mindless read for my birthday weekend at the beach. It was a pretty good read after a somewhat slow start.

Really well crafted, I found myself wanting to know what happens to the protagonist after it ended, and that's always a good sign.

My first and favorite Deaver book. A very fast-paced, well-written mystery/thriller.

I wasn't sure how many stars to give this book, because I really liked it until the end, then I hated it. Warning: SPOILER ALERT! The end falls into this trap that mysteries/thrillers so often do, where at the end the author feels the need to exact revenge. So one of the characters - a cop, potential victim, or victim's family member ends up killing the killer. Which I hate, I feel it's such a chicken ending - why can't justice be done throught the courts? Or maybe I should stick to legal thri...more
