Moving from fable and historical fiction to contemporary realism, this book of stories from Barry Lopez is erotic and wise, full of irresistible characters doing things they shouldn't do for reasons that are mysterious and irreducible. In "The Letters of Heaven," a packet of recently discovered 17th-century Peruvian love letters presents a 20th-century man with the paralyz...more

These stories are all perfectly crafted gems of communication. Lopez makes each one a vessel to bear a particular insight, one of his seemingly vast store of wisdom-objects. The stories are all 'slices of a life' as my love would call, them, but yet they are never boring. Rather than focus on lives as we have become habituated to them, he brings out the deep nature of lives we all know to be there. His characters are laconic and flawed, but each understands something truly crucial about life...more

I read this book because I had to read a book that had word in the tittle on the list and it had light in the tittle so I read it. I also read this book because it sounded like a interesting book by the tittle. The last reason i read this because i couldn't find any other book.
My opion on this book is it was a great book but not the best book i've read. It's about this girl name Libby and she going a vacation with a guy name David. She just broke up with Brad in a 2 year relation...more

My good friend Paul recommended this book to me. Because he described Barry Lopez as a naturalist writer I initially expected this book to be completely non-fictional. Boy was I wrong! After getting involved in the stories I was shocked at the supernatural twists and turns they took. However, once I got used to this unexpected formula I found that I really enjoyed the stories. They possess a character and flair that I don't think I've ever seen before. The stories were very captivating. A couple...more

This is an excellent collection of short works. Barry Lopez manages to capture the beauty of everyday things and has an eye for bringing out the important details. If the saying, the art is in the details, holds true, then Lopez is quite the artist. I purchased this collection after hearing The Mappist read on NPR's Selected Shorts, and if you like that story, you're likely to find others in this collection that will satisfy.

I really enjoyed this. I'd not previously heard of the author, but keen to read more. Not sure how I got onto this -- discovered the book title and author scribbled in the back of my notebook whilst in the library one day. No idea what prompted me to write it down, but glad I did.

i'd give it five stars for the story "The Mappist" included here, which is beautiful. The rest of the collection, however, veers wildly from simply boring and overwrought to truly horrifying.

Perfection. These are amaising short stories, perfection of the medium. What a pleasure to be transported to Barry Lopez land where there are acres of land between words. He's a craftsman. The stories are not so much read as collected. Read read read this book but you can't have mine.

I loved his style of writing and found I enjoyed the short stories even more than his longer pieces. I am so amazed at how much information/detail/description/images that he can pack into such a short piece. I give it 4.5 stars.

Not exactly what you expect from Lopez, which is good. And bad. A little too fictionally forced and the landscapes are not stages, but props.
Chary
I use some of the texts in this collection to teach imagery and voice in my class. Beatiful prose.
