This is a curiosity I picked up a long time ago. It was a novel written by a man who created my favorite (and long-gone) comic strip in the 80s--"Rudy in Hollywood".

This was an unexpectedly fun book to read. It has a number of Dave Barry moments, in which the odd mix of people (and beings) work their way into absurd situations. At the same time, the author showed close familiarity with the details of military life in early 1930s China. He repeatedly shows how great plans can fall victim to small mistakes in details in putting together his story.
