An excellent single-volume survey of the whys and wherefores of medieval warfare from the Carolingian era to the rise of gunpowder and standing armies at the dawn of the Renaissance. Ironically because of the surfeit of books on the subject, medieval warfare can be a difficult subject to study effectively - the question of where to begin threatens to stultify the aspiring student. Shelves: history, medieval
A collecting of essays. Some essayists have better rhythm than others. I specially enjoyed account of Henry V's battles. Also incredibly illuminating regarding the actual role of chivalry in battle field. Debunking a lot of myths created around the figure of the knight.

Non fiction book. I've owned this book for many years, but never read it. Decided to take a look at it after reading Crispin.
