The book left me disappointed. I'm currently teaching an academic writing class in which I got saddled with this and with Giltrow's _Academic Writing_ introduction. The latter book is excruciating and commits all the sins of prolix writing and obtuse communication it warns students against. The Levin book doesn't do that but having gone through it and dissected it piece by piece for weekly readings, I remain unclear what, exactly, it does do.
